I know, I know, you're saying to yourself "Health? What has that got to do with me?"
Oak Forest's Northwest Community Health Fair is taking place this Saturday, February 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Frank Black Middle School.
Sure, you could attend because there will be 35 different vendors with tons of information and resources OR because there will be free flu shots, vaccinations and blood pressure checks OR because there are break-out sessions on stress management and cyber bullying and other mental health topics OR because we are giving away Rockets, Astros and Dynamo tickets OR because there will be a great kid zone -- AND everything is free -- AND the target audience is all human beings: seniors, kids, families, single adults, high schoolers, etc.
Sure, one or more of those reasons to attend might appeal to you, but if if none of them do, you should still add it to your Saturday morning agenda -- to make at lease a cameo appearance -- because we need you to attend.
We would like to make this exceptional event a recurring happening for our area -- at least annually and possibly semi-annually. But if we have lackluster attendance despite the long list of reasons to attend on Saturday, it will probably not recur. The project would likely end with a whimper.
On the other hand, if the model -- which is a collaborative effort of area churches, area schools, HISD and community members -- proves successful in terms of attendance, it can serve a template not only for future health fairs in our area and beyond -- but also for additional collaborative events that will benefit our neighborhoods and our community members.
Apologies for the long post, but I am asking as a personal favor that you stop by on Saturday -- whether or not the topic of health applies to you personally. We want to successfully launch this inaugural project in a significant way -- to create a proven template for future projects and to enhance our ability to add to our ever-growing list great neighborhood events.
See you Saturday. Here's to good health!
