We love this award winning photo by former Rice in Spain participant Bryan Najera Demoraes (from his semester in Brazil)!!

Congrats to Baker senior, Bryan Najera Demoraes, for winning the first place in our 2021 Study Abroad Photo Contest category, Postcard Perfect! Bryan studied at Universidade de São Paulo 🇧🇷 as an exchange student in Spring 20. His photo is titled “Pandemic Prédio and Pink Pôr-do-sol.”

Photographer's comments:
Perhaps the most unique element for many people's recent study abroad, including me, was reacting to the Covid-19 pandemic that fell upon the global stage March 2020. While many students were compelled to abandon their experience, I was fortunate enough to thanks to Rice's personalized advising, my exchange program's flexibility, and certainly the support of my family both in São Paulo and back in Houston. This photo reflects part of this difference as it captures the view from my apartment near the República neighborhood after having changed my extended housing option a handful of times due to the pandemic. The prédio housing style highlights the physical distancing measures Brazilians were taking against Covid-19, albeit with disproportional ease. The sunset creates a comfortable, aspirational setting for days with even more warmth. And the Brazilian flag marks the community and resilience crafted by the people amid a challenging government struggling with the crisis.

From Dr. Song: I took students to SK headquarters in Seoul today to thank SK Innovation for their generous donation which made Rice in Korea program possible. Students had a chance to explore SK's newly renovated shared office where there are snack bars, library, VR room, nap cubicles, fitness center and meditation room. They ended their half day experience in SK office with small discussion about what they have discovered about Korean company culture and cooperate social responsibility.
장학금을 지원해 준 sk innovation 에 감사인사를 전하기 위해 학생들과 함께 SK 본사를 방문했다. 공유오피스 투어와 체험 후 한국의 회사문화와 공유오피스의 공간사용, 기업의 사회적 책임에 대한 간단한 토의를 진행했다. 그 후에는 sk innovation 이 지원하는 사회적 기업인 모어댄을 방문해 업싸이클을 통한 환경적, 사회적 가치와 기업의 선순환에 대해 알아보는 시간도 가졌다. 기획부터 진행까지 손이 많이 가는 사업이었는데 올해도 무사히 잘 끝나서 다행이다!
