Tatvam School of Dance

Tatvam School of Dance 'Tatvam' means 'essence'. Students are also taught theory of Bharathanatyam to further their understanding of the art form.

'Tatvam' was founded in the year 2014, with a mission to promote the Vazhuvoor style of Bharathanatyam in its purest form among the younger generation of artistic talents in the Houston area and to guide them to experience divinity through art. At 'Tatvam', students are meticulously trained in the 'Vazhuvoor bani' which is one of the ancient and traditional styles of Bharathanatyam. The school’s v

ision is to pass on this beautiful tradition without altering its uniqueness and authenticity as performed and propagated by legendary practitioners of the style. The school believes that a strong foundation is essential in training to be a good dancer and therefore, tremendous amount of time is spent in learning the 'adavus' or basic steps. Such training helps students imbibe the beauty of the Vazhuvoor bani characterized by realistic and subtle facial expressions and crisp yet graceful movements. Lavanya, a passionate dancer and teacher, considers herself blessed to have trained in this style for more than three decades under the legendary Guru ‘Kalaimamani’, ‘Acharya Choodamani’ Smt. Rhadha, one of the foremost teachers and choreographers of Bharathanatyam today and the torchbearer of the Vazhuvoor bani.
