You've probably heard that most students in the U.S. are not proficient in math. What you may not know is that this isn't just a problem for high school students, it starts much earlier.

The good news is that there's still time to help your struggling students catch up and close the math achievement gap. But where do you begin?

Watch this video for 3 easy steps to getting started with your math interventions, no matter what grade level you teach.

As educators, our focus should always be on empowering students and driving meaningful progress in the classroomβ€”not just teaching to the test. Your content knowledge and how you use it to inspire and move your students is what truly matters.

The data that counts is the growth you see in your classroom, not just on standardized tests. Honestly, you might be surprised how little I focus on test prep. It's all about engaging instruction and real learning! πŸ“šβœ¨

🌟 True story: Had a student, special ed in 5th grade. Struggled with reading, but amazing memory. Taught her science & math. Passed math, unsure about science test due to low reading. But guess what? She aced it because it was read to her! She nailed it with her thinking skills. Words might not click, but she had it & conquered math. Lesson: Never underestimate students who struggle with reading. πŸ“š

You don't need a 45-minute diagnostic to find a math gap. 🎯

One question β€” pulled from the grade level beneath the one you teach β€” tells you exactly where the gap starts. In 5 minutes flat, you'll know whether you're dealing with a concept gap, a prerequisite gap, a procedure gap, or a language gap... and exactly what to do next.
No more re-teaching the wrong thing for weeks.

🎯 Are you tired of guessing what your students need? It's time to stop and start using data to drive your decisions!
When you use a structured math intervention cycle, you'll start to see real results. Here's what you can expect:
βœ… Data-driven decisions β€” no more guessing! Use observations, test scores, and quantitative data to identify exactly what each student needs.
βœ… Targeted teaching β€” say goodbye to random reteaching or scrolling through Facebook groups for ideas. Find the real gap and address it directly.
βœ… Measurable progress β€” watch your students move forward over time with a proven system that works.
When I applied this math intervention cycle in my own classroom, my students made incredible progress. And the best part? I no longer dreaded data meetings with my principal because I had a system that could back up my results.
Want to see it in action? Head back to Workshop 2 to see exactly how my students progressed over time on my data wall. πŸ“Š

Teaching with confidence is possible β€” and it starts with the right system. πŸ’ͺ

πŸ” **Three Red Flags for Math Intervention** 🚩

Struggling with identifying when a student needs extra math support? Here are three key red flags to watch out for:

1️⃣ **Trouble Reading or Understanding Word Problems**: If a student has difficulty with word problems, it could signal an underlying issue with reading. Literacy supports might be needed alongside math intervention.

2️⃣ **Conceptual Understanding**: Can the student explain the "why" behind their algorithms? Understanding the process behind multiplying two and three-digit numbers, for example, is crucial. Visual representations can be a big help!

3️⃣ **Explaining Their Thinking**: Can your students articulate why they chose a particular strategy or how certain words in a problem guided them? This is vital for deep comprehension and successful problem-solving.

➑️ What other signs do you look for during your math interventions? Share your experience and insights in the comments below! Let's support each other in helping our students succeed. πŸ’ͺπŸ“š

🍎 Teaching tip of the day! Knowing when to reteach β€” and how β€” can make all the difference in your students' learning journey.
When many students are struggling with a skill, whole group reteaching is the way to go. But when just a few students need extra help, small group instruction is your best bet.
And when it comes to math, don't underestimate the power of going back to basics! Focusing on conceptual understanding and bringing in manipulatives can help struggling students build a stronger foundation.
