Bonacca Island's Water
We need to protect the streams.
When i was young and living in Sandy Bay in the 60's I put in a dam at the 180 foot level of Kirkconnell Springs that runs down the middle of my property. I had so much pressure that I got the idea of having free eleectricity. I bought a pelton wheel which is a type of water wheel that uses high pressure and low volumn. I hooked it up to a generator and had all the power i needed. After a few months i noticed that the stream was changing, No longer was the historical flow because it was lessoned by the bypass supplying the generator. The abundant life, crabs, crawfish, fish and various other forms of life was decreasing. I was killing the stream. I disconnected the generator and the stream came back to life.
When we damn the stream high up , just to have free water flow, it kills the stream especially if you take all the water. You can see the streams below the two main municiple dams in Sandy Bay no longer team with life.
A much better plan for the environment would be to Build tanks at the bottom of the streams and pump the water to a purification plant. This also is a short term solution because the total amount of water from these streams will not be enough to satisfy the growing water needs.
We need to protect the Water Table
One solution, as was done by Alcalde Haylock many years ago, is to drill wells and pump the water. If we overdo this solution, we will suck the water table down, it will. eventually ruin the island Jungles. That will not happen in our lifetime but pumping will eventually ruin the lush environment. This solution needs to be short term. Roatan wells are now brackish, the fresh water table is so low the sea is encroaching.
Our Best Solution , water from the sea.
In the near future the island will be using desalination for making drinking water from the sea. This will require investment from outside sources. This will also bring water meters to the plan to help conserve water and suppliment the cost.
When we plan we need to look at the impack for generations ahead. We need to leave our decedents a chance to experience the Green Island too.
