MY STORY OF PERSEVERANCE
By Maria Gonzalez

My name is Maria Gonzalez. I am a proud Mexican woman and the mother of four beautiful children, and this is my story.

When I moved from San Antonio to Houston, I found myself starting over once again in 2010. Life has not always been easy for me. I have faced many hardships while trying to provide for my family. I worked countless jobs, many that others might overlook or dismiss. I have waited tables and cleaned houses. I did whatever it took to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. At that time, I was a single mother raising three children. The weight of responsibility was heavy, but giving up was never an option. Like so many mothers, I discovered a strength within myself that simply would not allow me to quit.

Speaking only Spanish made me feel limited—my dreams seemed so far away, almost unreachable. Still, I made a promise to myself: I would learn English and earn my GED. It seemed impossible at first, but I knew that if I wanted a better future for my children and myself, I had to sacrifice, persevere, and push through every obstacle.

Through faith and determination, I accomplished my goals. I earned my GED, and six years ago, I began speaking English. This step opened the door to something even bigger: the chance to pursue my education in Business at Interactive College of Technology. What I learned there gave me the courage to take one of the greatest leaps of my life.

Today, I stand proudly as a U.S. citizen—a dream that once felt so distant, but now represents freedom, belonging, and opportunity not just for me, but for my children. Gaining my citizenship is more than paperwork; it is proof that every sacrifice, every late night, every whispered prayer has been worth it.

At the same time, my son and I are opening Good News Café & Bakery, a dream that combines our hard work, education, and love for family and community. This is not just a business, it is a symbol of perseverance, of creating something lasting to pass down to my children, and of giving back to the city that gave to me.

Looking back, my journey, is paved with sleepless nights, silent tears, whispered prayers, and countless sacrifices. But when I reflect, I don’t just see struggle—I see strength, faith, and determination.

If there is one message I want to leave with others, it is this: no matter how far away your dreams may feel, with hard work, faith, and perseverance, they are within your reach. ICT has been more than a school to me—it has been a stepping stone, a reminder to believe in myself, and a push toward endless possibility.

If I can do this—if I can build a business, raise a family, and reach for citizenship—you can too. Never stop believing in your dreams, and never give up.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some carry multimeters and save you from 95° summers.
Ever wonder what it takes to become the person who fixes your AC when it quits on the hottest day of the year? The education of an HVAC technician is more intense than most people think.

It’s part electrician, part plumber, part engineer, and part detective.
Here’s what the path usually looks like:
• High school foundation: Math, physics, and shop classes help. If you liked figuring out how things work, you’re already halfway there.
• Trade school: 10 months to 2 years for a certificate or associate degree. You study refrigeration cycles, electrical systems, airflow, and EPA regulations. And yes, there will be tests.
• Externship/Apprenticeship: 3 to 5 years of paid, on the job training under a licensed tech. This is where book smarts meet real world problems.
• Never stops: New refrigerants, smart thermostats, heat pumps, codes that change every year. Good HVAC techs are lifelong students.

Tag an HVAC tech who keeps your world comfortable. They deserve the credit.

Health is Wealth. And it pays interest every single day.
• Waking up without an alarm and actually feeling rested
• Having the energy to say yes to a last minute walk with a friend
• Being able to carry your groceries, your toddler, or your 70 year old self up the stairs
• Clear focus during the hours you are working, so you don’t need 10 hours to do 6 hours of work

Small deposits that compound:
• Move daily: A 15 minute walk counts. Your future knees will thank you.
• Drink water before coffee: Future you won’t have that 3pm headache.
• Sleep like it’s your job: Because your mood, memory, and immune system treat it like one.
• Eat food that had a mom: More ingredients from the earth, fewer from a lab.
• Protect your peace: Say no to things that cost you mental health. That’s not lazy. That’s asset management.

You don’t need a perfect diet or a six pack. You just need a body and mind that let you live the life you’re working for.

What we admire most about our immigrant students:
• Humility: Asking “Can you say that again?” in a room full of native English speakers takes guts.
• Resourcefulness: Our students not only use ICT as a source of education, but they use movies, sticky notes, and more to practice their English and learn.
• Perspective: They see gaps in the market the rest of us miss because they’ve lived in two worlds. By speaking two languages, they have a unique view into both cultures.

Some of the best customer service, food, tech, and community businesses in our neighborhoods were started by someone who learned English as an adult. They didn’t wait until their accent was perfect. They started anyway.

To everyone who’s ever rehearsed an email out loud or used Google Translate before a vendor call: you’re not “behind.” You’re bilingual, resilient, and you’re building the economy in two languages.

Tag an entrepreneur whose story inspires you. Let’s celebrate the people who crossed borders and built something here from scratch.
