When Sylvia Tanguma, a retired teacher from McAllen, talks with parents about a $1 billion school voucher plan, she said they are open-minded — until they realize how vouchers will impact their local school districts. In McAllen ISD, Tanguma said, the voucher plan — which provides up to $11,500 in public funds for parents to spend at private schools — could pull up to $8 million from the school district, leading to fewer teachers, larger class sizes, and less money for public schools that haven’t seen a funding increase since 2019. “ I have not heard of one educator that is for vouchers,” said Tanguma, a teacher for 24 years before retiring in January. She took that message to lawmakers at the State Capitol on March 17 as part of an advocacy day organized by the Texas American Federation of Teachers, which is a labor union for teachers. Tanguma is president of the organization’s chapter in McAllen. Some 175 educators traveled from across the state to urge lawmakers to increase funding for public schools and vote down the school voucher plan, which is a top priority of Gov. * Reduces the basic allotment increase to just $50 per student (when we need $1,000)
* Eliminates support staff from the meager raises that increase will provide
* Increases the funding that privately run charter schools receive
* Inserts the private school voucher from SB 8 that Texans already REJECTED
