This is an excellent article.
“So please stop assuming that one kind of autism is “more autistic” than other kinds of autism.
Red isn’t “more spectrum” than green or blue. Apples aren’t “more fruit” than oranges. That’s not how it works.”
“It’s a Spectrum” Doesn’t Mean What You Think | The Aspergian | A Neurodivergent Collective
What you believe the "autism spectrum" means is not what it actually means. It's more like...

I have experience supporting people with ASD in all these areas. I was an in-home aide starting in 1993 (!!!), worked in group homes and recreational programs until I got my OT degree in 2002, and practiced pediatric OT in schools, in private practice, and as a consultant for Autism service providers until I moved to Texas in July 2017!
If you’re curious how I could support YOUR family, drop me a message!
FRIDAY FACTS:

- 1 in 37 boys
- 1 in 151 girls
- Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than girls.
- Most children were still being diagnosed after age 4, though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2.
- Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
- Minority groups tend to be diagnosed later and less often.
- Early intervention affords the best opportunity to support healthy development and deliver benefits across the lifespan.
- There is no medical detection for autism.

This is a great article and concurs with my experience over the past several years:: cognitive self regulation strategies are often more effective than sensory strategies! I like how this article gives simple suggestions of cognitive strategies that are appropriate even for young children!
If you’re wondering how to manage your child’s behaviour or support their self-regulation, I CAN HELP! ❤️
One Magic Tip That Will Help Your Child Calm Down In A Snap
My 4 year old stands there bawling in the middle of his room. All I did was ask him to put away the Duplo bricks that have ben haphazardly strewn all across his room, and he looses it. "Kiddo, I don't understand why you're so upset, can you tell me why you're so sad?" He looks at me and bawls harder...

My now-eleven year-old-son has all his Texas buddies over watching his film debut at the age of 5 in the riveting "Slant Board Tutorial"...😆 It really is a good 15-min video explaining functional and non-functional grasps and how the slant board and vertical surfaces can help!
Of course, I can help develop and implement these strategies for any child with a non-functional grasp {which is approximately 50% of school-aged children}.

This is a great article which hints at the new research coming out about interoception - the “8th sense” which is connected to sensory processing and regulation, therefore connected to self-regulation, therefore connected to behaviour. If you’re wondering if your child *really* has a stomach ache or headache or other body symptom in relation to anxiety or other behaviour challenges, I can help you sort it out and give you concrete strategies of how to deal with it.
