Smalley (1943–2005), Robert F. Curl (b. 1933), and Harold W. Kroto (b. 1939) furthered progress to the long-held objective of molecular-scale electronics and other nanotechnologies. Molecular-scale electronics, or molecular electronics, is the ongoing effort to use individual molecules to perform functions in electronic circuitry.
