Continue getting to know us this week with Stephanie! Here’s what she has to share:
Most people don't know this, but I actually got started as a science teacher because I was not in love with my experiences with my university’s pre-med program, which included summer internships with an OBGYN, and semesters working with a pancreatic cancer lab. I wanted to work intimately with people and help them on a daily basis. Unsure of my next steps, I thought about a person in my life that had a big impact on my life, my 5th grade teacher. She saw that my falling asleep in class and inability to pay attention meant I needed more challenges and she advocated for a new accelerated math class to be created for a few other students like myself. That math class was the reason I was excited for school every day. Wanting to help other students feel the passion for learning the way my 5th grade teacher did for me, I decided to enroll in the masters in teaching dual BA/MS program my 3rd year.

Beginning teaching in 2002 I have always felt the natural high from helping students discover themselves and find their own love in learning in their own way. I continued to teach secondary science, while earning a second masters in oceanography and a phd in science curriculum and instruction, because I love learning as much as I love teaching. Now 18 years after making that decision to change careers, I am a professor that teaches current professors, as well as undergraduates that want to become teachers, how to teach science. Working with Academic Independence, I can share my love for teaching and learning and help others find the same joy in their own experiences.

I truly believe I have the best job in the world and couldn't imagine doing anything else. Helping others develop their passions and become the teacher they want to be, the teacher their students need them to be, is the greatest reward.

I haven't introduced myself here for a while, so I thought I'd do that again. A big warm hello to all of you! My name is Lauren Price, and I'm part of the team at  Academic Independence Coaching; you may know me as the originator of the "Strain your brain to retain" quote. ;)

When I was 24, I fell in love with education after finding myself helping out with a study skills class while interviewing for marketing jobs. Realizing soon after, marketing and public relations weren't for me, and I needed to go back to school and learn everything I could about my new passion for educating students and teaching them how to learn and study. In  2013 we decided to go for it, and Academic Independence was born. 6  years later, we've taken the tools we've discovered and prepared a way to equip teachers all over with our tried and true, immediately applicable brain-friendly and self-regulated learning approach towards teaching.

I spend most of my days working with students or my team on new ways to support both students and teachers.  I love every minute of it. For me, what I do is so much more than just a job, it's something I picture myself doing for years to come because it allows me to turn on the light bulb in so many students and help teachers do the same for theirs.

I'm also a mom of two boys and our dog, Finn. I love to take him for walks. You can find me playing a serious game of Spades with my boys and husband in my free time, something we have taken up since the pandemic, or doing a family competition bake-offs with my brother and his family.

I'd love to get to know you a little better; comment below and say hello by telling me your favorite study method or something you have learned lately that blew your mind. I love it when my mind is blown by something. For me, most recently, after reading Benedict Carey's, How We Learn, I learned that studying in multiple locations is better than studying in the same place. Wow!

Reflect and Regroup on December 12th and 13th!
Whew! You made it to December and now you are so close to a little bit of rest and relaxation. But wait, that is not the only R & R that is needed at this time of year. It is the perfect time to reflect and regroup about our instructional practices in 2020. This 2 day workshop will guide you to target areas for growth and improvement, develop instructional goals and create action plans to implement in January. This workshop is highly collaborative using a PLC approach, that includes several facilitators and participants. The end goal is to leave school for the holidays with a clear plan to start 2021 new and refreshed.
