Kono Group at Rice University - Int'l Programs for S&E Students Connecting science & engineering undergraduates with the best of research worldwide! or Japan. U.S. from August – September. universities (1 week).

The Nakatani RIES: Research & International Experiences for Students connects undergraduates with the best of science & engineering research in the U.S. The program serves as a catalyst for U.S. & Japanese students interested in future graduate study and research and contributes to the development of a generation of globally-engaged scientists & engineers who have the technical and culture skills

to contribute to vibrant international research collaborations in the future. Fellows can apply to spend up to 12 weeks in Japan in summer from mid-May to mid-August. While abroad, fellows participate in a Japanese language and culture orientation (3 weeks), conduct a hands-on research internship in a leading science or engineering host laboratory in Japan (9 weeks), and participate in a Re-Entry Program with the capstone being the presentation of a research poster at a Rice University research symposium (1 week). Japanese Fellows can apply to spend up to seven weeks in the U.S. While abroad, Japanese fellows participate in an Orientation to Research & Higher Education in the U.S. program (1 week), conduct a hands-on research internship in a leading science or engineering host laboratory at Rice University including the presentation of a final research poster (5 weeks), and participate in final week program designed to introduce students to the culture of research at other U.S. Japanese fellows will also have the option to apply for a Part II program that, if selected, would enable them to return to the U.S to conduct another 4 – 6 week research experience the following spring.

Learn more about the work Kaitlin Gili, an alumnus of the 2018 NK RIES program in Japan, has done to develop a mentorship program for women in physics and other male-dominated fields. Encouraging Women Across All Borders (EWAAB) is a non-profit organization that aims to strengthen the confidence of young women through personal mentorship, a strong support network of inspirational role models, and projects that encourage participants to go outside of their comfort zone in their careers of choice. The Gilman Scholarship is now accepting applications from U.S. undergraduates who plan to study abroad between May 2020 and April 2021. Applications are due by March 3 and eligible students may be selected for awards of up to $5,000. Special Gilman awards are also available: Gilman-McCain for child dependents of active duty service members, Gilman-Global Wales, Gilman-Education New Zealand, and Gilman-France.
