Threw a gender reveal for my 6th grade kiddos on Monday and forgot to post about it. Sadly I didn’t get pictures but I got the idea from teacher pay teacher and it turned out great! There was one station where they had to use a black light to find the letters b-i-n-k-y which was the key to one of the locks, then another station they had to look at a grocery list and sample baby food to discover what were the flavors of the baby food which gave them the answers to another lock, and lastly they had to look at a Target ad and find the difference in pricing from baby items like strollers and such which gave them the key to the third lock. But wait… there was one more lock. To find the key they had to look all around the room and they would have found the key tapped to the back of the “boy or girl” gender reveal sign hanging in the room. Every class was able to unlock the gender in less than 20 minutes and they all had a blast!!

My students using strategies from the book “Building Thinking Classrooms” to learn and explore a coordinate plane with four quadrants.
They started by looking at a picture with one quadrant and no numbers and wrote down everything they noticed and wondered. I then expanded the picture to two quadrants and then four as they built on their thinking. It was amazing to see them making connections to previous learning and those “aha” moments.
