Wonder Forest Schoolhouse began six years ago with one purpose: to help children connect to what is real. And to me, the forest is the most real place on earth.
When I established WFS, there was nothing like it here. No program where academics and the outdoors were woven together this way. Over the years, we've been happy to see our school inspire so many others to start outdoor programs, farm schools, or forest schools, as some call them, around the area and beyond. We've grown far past where we started, but at our core, we always come back to what works: nature as our main teacher.
I'd like to clarify something, though. No single person "invented" forest school. Forest school is simply the way children have always gravitated toward learning when given the chance. This way of learning has been happening on the American continent for thousands of years, long before the first settlers arrived.
Over the years, I've received so many emails and calls from people telling me how much they value what we've built here, and how they wish they had a program like this where they live. We're on summer break now, but through the years we've had students who traveled over an hour each way to attend, because their families found the drive well worth it. To everyone who has supported and encouraged us along the way: thank you. It means more than you know.
I started this program, and continue to offer it, not because it's easy, but because I truly believe children deserve a beautiful childhood and a beautiful, well-rounded education. They deserve to develop confidence and an unbreakable love of learning. If we want to change the trajectory of the world and make it a better place for generations to come, we must begin with the children of today.
That's what we're doing here at WFS. 🌲
