Our bodies alert us to trouble in many ways, from an increased heart rate to sweating or tightness in the chest or gut.

The best way to teach yourself to be in tune with these instincts is to practice paying attention to physical feelings. Throughout the day, do a simple body scan to see what your body is telling you.

For example, if you are tense around certain people at work, take a moment to consider why. Perhaps they are crossing a boundary that you aren’t even aware of.

It’s important to understand that boundaries aren’t permanent. In fact, you should continually reassess your boundaries to ensure they are serving you.

There may be certain times in your life when a particular boundary is needed; however, that boundary may not serve you in other aspects of your life. So be flexible!

Boundaries are meant for your well-being and protection.

An important aspect of setting emotional boundaries is identifying what is internally blocking us from detaching or setting that boundary.

If you’re unhappy at work, what’s blocking you from looking for other employment?

What is blocking you from walking away from a one-sided friendship?

Why do you feel responsible for others’ wellbeing instead of accepting that you don't have that kind of power or responsibility?

Question the things that are blocking you to better understand where your emotional boundaries lie.

When setting and understanding personal boundaries, it may be easier to start with physical space.

Physical boundaries pertain to your personal space, privacy, and body. Here are some factors to consider to gain a better understanding of your own comfort levels:

When greeting someone, do you give a handshake or a hug—to whom and when?

How do you feel about loud music, exposing your body, and locked doors?

Answering these questions will help you identify your physical boundaries. Share your findings in the comments.

Following through on expressing your boundaries isn’t always easy. But it’s the difference between living with your discomfort and honoring your boundaries.

When expressing your needs, remember that people won’t even realize they are crossing a boundary most of the time! Not letting them know is, in effect, doing them a disservice.

Here’s an example of how to share a boundary with a coworker:

Instead of telling someone that they are bothering you at work, reword your message into a need, for example, “I need some extra time to myself to focus on this project.”
