This week’s is to support career planning by helping students connect what they do well to specific career options. A way to implement this activity:

🔘 Identify 3 Student Strengths: Ask the student, family, or teachers to name strengths such as being organized, creative, good with hands, or friendly with others.

🔘 Match Each Strength to a Job Example: For each strength, brainstorm one job that uses it. Example: “Enjoys helping others” → grocery bagger, childcare helper, recreation aide, or customer service support.

🔘 Explore One Job Together: Look up a short description, picture, or video showing what that job looks like in real life.

🔘 Record Career Ideas for Future Planning: Add the job matches to the student’s ACP, IEP transition goals, or a career exploration folder.

Linking strengths to real careers helps students see a clear and motivating path toward their future. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

This week’s is to help students with disabilities start career planning by capturing their interests, strengths, and preferences on one simple page. Here’s a way to do it:

🔘 Start With Interests: Ask the student what they enjoy doing at school, at home, or in their free time. Write or draw their answers.

🔘 Add Strengths: List a few things the student does well, such as following routines, helping others, or working with their hands.

🔘 Connect to Jobs: Look up one or two jobs that match the interests or strengths and add pictures or short descriptions.

🔘 Keep It for Planning: Save the page in a transition folder or binder and revisit it when discussing future goals or classes.

A simple snapshot helps students see how their interests can lead to real career options. Let’s make progress one step at a time!

Judge Bars Layoffs Affecting IDEA Oversight 11/03/2025

El 31 de octubre, el Consejo para Niños Excepcionales informó: Jueza prohíbe despidos que afectan la supervisión de la IDEA

Una jueza federal bloqueó indefinidamente al Departamento de Educación de EE. UU. (ED) para que no procediera con los despidos masivos en su oficina de educación especial y en general, mientras el gobierno federal permanece paralizado, dictaminando que las acciones probablemente violan la ley federal y tienen motivaciones políticas.

La decisión de la jueza Susan Illston impide que el ED proceda con el despido de la mayoría de los expertos en educación especial de la Oficina de Programas de Educación Especial (OSEP), dejando a dicha oficina prácticamente vacía. Los defensores de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad celebraron el fallo, pero advirtieron que el futuro de los servicios para los estudiantes con discapacidad sigue siendo incierto, ya que el gobierno podría apelar. Sin personal, afirman los defensores, el departamento no puede cumplir con sus obligaciones bajo la Ley de Educación para-Personas con Discapacidades (IDEA).

Mientras tanto, la Secretaria de Educación, Linda McMahon, defendió los despidos, argumentando que la paralización demuestra que el departamento es innecesario y que la educación debería devolverse a los estados. Esta postura ha alarmado aún más a los defensores de la Ley de Educación para Personas con Discapacidades (IDEA, por sus siglas en inglés), quienes presionan al Congreso para que intervenga y proteja la supervisión federal de la educación especial.

Dear friends, I have been a bit away from the media because I am old school, but I know that for many of you it is the way to stay informed. I will try my best to provide you with tips or articles that can improve your knowledge. Let's start with it being almost 4 weeks into school and your responsibility as a parent is to keep up with your child's progress in their education.

Parent-teacher conferences are an integral part of both the special education teacher and the parents. They allow them to communicate important information to facilitate your child's progress. As a result, many parents may not remember exactly what was said at the ARD/IEP or 504 Plan meeting. You are a member of the team that writes your child's IEP. As a member of the IEP team, you can request that your child's IEP be reviewed and modified, if necessary. Waiting for the annual meeting may be too late. Why might I request a review of my child's IEP?

Some reasons to request an IEP review include:

Your child has met one or more of the goals written on the IEP.
Your child does not appear to be making enough progress toward one or more of the goals written on the IEP.
Your child is having adjustment difficulties.
You feel that your child needs more or other services to make progress.
You feel that your child no longer needs a service that he or she is currently receiving.
Your child has experienced a major change, such as an illness, injury, or surgery.
