MARTHA EUPHEMIA LOFTON HAYNES (Sept. 11,1890- July 24, 1980), was the first African American woman to earn a PhD in mathematics. Haynes was a math teacher for 47 years, teaching math in grade school, high school and at the college level. After she retired, Haynes served as President of the Washington D.C., Board of Education. She was the first African American woman to hold that position! Haynes advocated for desegregation and opposed the track system.

Benjamin Banneker (Nov. 9, 1731- Oct. 19, 1806) was a free African American almanac author, a mathematician, a surveyor and so much more. He took a liking to math at an early age, building a wooden clock that kept perfect time at 20 years of age. He also wrote an almanac predicting eclipses and planetary conjunctions.
