2020 has been a crazy year, for sure.

It’s taught me 3 main lessons:

1. Be persistent. Today’s pain breeds tomorrow’s success.

2. Do good. Help people because it’s the right thing to do. No one is an island and none of us are getting out of this alive. Do good.

3. Get weird. Taking yourself too seriously isn’t doing you any favors.

Y’all... I’m about to cry...

I made a friend around February thanks to the power of the internet. She is a writer and I’ve been giving her tips and pointers about freelancing and writing techniques.

She’s now nearly doubled her income and is starting to get more clients from the US (hard to do for most writers in her region.)

When my phone goes off at 4:30am, I always assume something bad is happening. But she just wanted to reach out and thank me for giving her a start in the writing world and helping her along the way.

I don’t write this as a humble brag. I write it because it’s good to have reminders that we can empower others by simply helping as we can.

My morning coffee has never tasted so good.

Is it the end of TikTok?

The platform has become immensely popular and has been a dream come true for content creators. The community and the culture of the user base has made TikTok what it is today.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has made it perfectly clear that the administration is looking at banning TikTok. Mind you, India has already banned the app and many other countries are expected to follow suit. The bans stem from concerns that the app is collecting user data that is being given to the Chinese government. Investigations are currently underway to determine what the security risks of the app are. Australia has announced that it considers this to be a potential national security threat.

(Oh, btw, remember what COPPA did to Youtube? Now that is ALSO being investigated to see if TikTok is in violation of that policy.)

The simple truth is this: if you’re making content but don’t own your audience, you are completely dependent on the stability and policies of your current platform. Just like Vine or MySpace, you will find yourself starting over from square 1.

Creators put in countless hours to build a following and connect with their audience. Why not build it in a way that it will last?

Franz Kafka, the story goes, encountered a little girl in the park where he went walking daily. She was crying. She had lost her doll and was desolate.

Kafka offered to help her look for the doll and arranged to meet her the next day at the same spot.

Unable to find the doll, he composed a letter from the doll and read it to her when they met.

'Please do not mourn me, I have gone on a trip to see the world. I will write you of my adventures.'

This was the beginning of many letters. When he and the little girl met, he read her from these carefully composed letters the imagined adventures of the beloved doll. The little girl was comforted.

When the meetings came to an end, Kafka presented her with a doll. She obviously looked different from the original doll. An attached letter explained 'My travels have changed me.'

Many years later, the now grown girl found a letter stuffed into an unnoticed crevice in the cherished replacement doll.

In summary it said:
*Every thing that you love, you will eventually lose. But, in the end, love will return in a different form.'*

At the end of the day, the world is bigger than our plans for it.

The nature of those who can adapt is that they will survive.

The nature of those who can’t is that they perish in their own hubris.

Pivot.
