Writing curriculum is hard. Creating courses that you don’t see in classrooms is definitely harder. I have to think how a child can learn about Artificial Intelligence (for example) knowing that my students have limited resources. How can I have kids conceptualize and create art that can transform into art therapy…over the internet? How can I create a class about grief when I’m going through it myself? My mind is constantly racing, constantly trying to solve our educational inequities so ALL students can succeed, and creating everything and I mean everythinggggg from scratch.

So I love to go away, with my dog Nova, to write. I’ve learned so much about writing therapy, aromatherapy, and how nature instantly changes my mood.

I write this because mental health has a long way to go before it’s taken seriously in schools. We need social-emotional classes. We need to dampen the connotation that therapy is bad. We need to show students all of the different ways to take care of themselves internally, so they can grow outwardly.

Not many will/can say this out loud, but it shouldn’t be “always academics.” We need to really start thinking about the whole child. Not just what we wish it was, but to actually provide the opportunities to learn and grow as a human being. Social-emotional skills can save our kids lives - shouldn’t that be more important anyways? I know I’m sick and tired of our kids being buried because the streets are swallowing them alive.
