🌞 The Rising SUNS of Sunnyside | — TURNING TRASH INTO TREASURE PART 2 : One Panel, One Student, One Dream at a Time ⚡🌍
After his cancer surgery, the late Air Force Veteran and South Union Community Development President, Efrem Jernigan, stood with purpose explaining to generous solar equipment donors how their contributions were more than panels… they were pathways to opportunity.

🎓 His mission: to teach STEM education to 3rd–12th grade students, build clean-energy careers, and revitalize his birth community in Sunnyside, Houston, Texas through a 52-megawatt solar farm that transforms a landfill into light, economics, and clean energy.
But that vision has been stalled for years by City of Houston politics, despite being approved in 2019, a project Efrem himself wrote and won the proposal for, symbolizing what’s possible when innovation meets community purpose.

🚛 The story continues from the previous episode:
Efrem, along with Unity One Movement’s Executive Director, Charlie (then an 18-year-old student), and South Union CDC staff, load up dozens of donated solar panels which is a physical reminder that real power is in the people who lift together.

⚙️ We then fast forward to the classroom(Veteran’s Garden):
In partnership with Green Careers Texas, lead instructor Mark McCollum walks students through the essentials like panel handling, ground prep, and wire management, turning theory into skill, and hope into hands-on education.
This is more than a solar lesson — it’s a living legacy.
Efrem Jernigan’s dream lives on in every student, every garden, every watt of energy built from love, learning, and light.
💛 Help us keep his mission alive.
Together, we can:
✅ Create jobs for youth like Charlie
✅ Build clean, green infrastructure
✅ Continue to educate and innovate the minds of the future
🌞 Let’s rise as the new SUNS of Sunnyside!

🌞 The Rising SUNS of Sunnyside | Part 1 — Turning Trash into Treasure ♻️⚡
In this deeply moving 3-minute feature, the late Air Force Veteran and South Union Community Development President, Efrem Jernigan, shares a glimpse of his mission before undergoing cancer surgery, teaching us what it truly means to turn “trash into treasure.”

💬 “We receive solar panel donations from generous people who no longer have use for them,” Efrem says, standing proudly beside a solar panel ground mount installation of repurposed panels. “We use them to teach our students STEM education,” showing them that nothing is wasted, not even energy.
Symbolically and historically, Efrem Jernigan was the man who wrote and won the proposal for the 240-acre Sunnyside Solar Farm project in Houston back in 2019, a project that will transform a former landfill into a 52-megawatt renewable energy powerhouse.

🔄 The story then fast-forwards later that year after his surgery, showing Efrem, his student Charley, members of the South Union Community Development Corporation, and the Unity One Movement’s Executive Director arriving to pickup panels in Sugar Land, Texas. Their mission: to pick up a generous donation of over 50 solar panels and related equipment which is proof that his vision continued to grow, even as he battled cancer.

🚛 With a 20-foot trailer hitched and a community’s hope in tow, they load up the panels that will power new lessons, opportunities, and lives.
Efrem’s story is not just about energy, it’s about human energy: the power of giving, teaching, and transforming forgotten spaces and people into something radiant.
