Biosensing technologies are becoming increasingly important in healthcare and wellness. From glucose monitors used in diabetes care to next-generation wearable devices designed to track biomarkers of stress, fatigue and metabolic health. Researchers Yixin Liu and Grace Dykstra have developed breakthrough technology that expands this biosensing capabilities. Their work was recently honored with the Michigan Tech’s 2026 Bhakta Rath Research Award.

The Bhakta Rath Award honors a faculty member and Ph.D. student research pair for groundbreaking achievements in science and engineering in anticipation of the future needs of the nation. Liu and Dykstra’s synthetic molecularly imprinted polymers, or MIPs, could make healthcare more reliable and accessible around the world, influencing diagnostics, monitoring, and beyond.

“I hope it will help facilitate easier access to healthcare by providing lower-cost, reliable options for biomarker detection,” said Dykstra. “Ultimately, these technologies could support earlier diagnosis, preventative care, and prognostic monitoring for a variety of diseases and medical conditions.”

With everyone’s eyes to the moon following the successful flight of the Artemis II, Michigan Tech’s Astro-Huskies are making sure robots are ready for the lunar surface.

The team placed third in this May’s NASA Lunabotics Challenge, an annual year-long competition in which university student teams design, build, and test prototype lunar construction robots. Their prototype MOOSE, or Mobile Operations for Off-world Surface Excavation, successfully qualified to the finals at the Kennedy Space Center where judges assessed berm size, robot weight, communications, energy use and automation to determine overall scores.

“I'm so incredibly proud of what the team achieved this year,” said Katherine Rauscher, mechanical engineering senior and team project manager. “It was absolutely worth it to see everything pay off with our record-breaking performance at competition.”

In Zack Fredin’s classroom, coursework in civil engineering becomes a game where everyone wins.

“I see learning as an adventure where there are many paths to the final destination,” says Fredin, associate teaching professor and this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award in the category for associate professors/teaching professors, professors/teaching professors, and professors of practice.

His gamified approach to course content puts students in semester-long teams that promote accountability, participation, and peer-to-peer learning.

“I think it’s incredibly important to spend the time to understand each student’s path and to provide the support they need to endure the uphills or challenges,” he said, “keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is not about how a student gets to the end of their own path, but rather that getting there is what matters.”

Here come the Astro-Huskies! 🌕

The MTU MINE Astro-Huskies will compete in the annual NASA Lunabotics Competition finals over the next three days at the Kennedy Space Center with their rover robot prototype, MOOSE (Mobile Operations for Off-world Surface Excavation). After competing in qualifying rounds against 46 other university teams, the Astro-Huskies places in the top 10 to make it to the finals. Go Astro-Huskies!

At Michigan Tech, we know snow, and this winter was no exception! ❄️

The Keweenaw Peninsula saw a total of 360.6 inches of snowfall this winter season, just 30 inches shy of the all-time record! Vistas like Brockway Mountain may not be snowcapped anymore, but our researchers are always investigating the dynamics at play in our local surroundings.

This winter, Ben Kopec and his team from the Michigan Tech Great Lakes Research Center took their snowmobile-attached isotopic analyzer to Brockaway's peak to gather data as part of their ongoing water cycle tracing research.
