This swarm found someone’s used beekeeping equipment (they don’t want bees yet) and took up residence. Brought them home (in two Nuc boxes because there are so many!) they filled a ten frame deep!

So yesterday while helping a young couple set up their first hive and transfer their Nuc to said hive, I had an “ah crap” moment when the queen was in the bottom of the Nuc and in cupping her (I’m too clumsy with my gloved fingers to try and pick her up) in my hands, she flew off!!! Playing it cool and saying “oh she will come back” and starting to sweat, I continued their teaching and showing them the eggs, larvae, and capped brood, how to position the frames, etc. The children in attendance, a six year old girl and eight year old boy, were enjoying learning and having the bees lite onto their gloved hands, etc. Suddenly, the woman says “look, they really love her” pointing to a cluster of bees on the young girls back. Was it? Yes! The queen had landed on her back and had a retinue around her. Phew! I gently took the queen and held her over the hives, where she quickly disappeared! I had envisioned making an emergency calls to see who had a queen!! And no, they did not leave that bowl of sugar water there!

First swarm catch of the year! They were right at eye level, couldn’t have been easier!!
