Hoover Parents United for Dyslexia .Org Change starts now. Fight for literacy justice in Hoover. Because reading is a right-not a privilege. Our children are in crisis, and our city knows it.

I’m a proud mom to an amazing little boy who attends Shades Mountain Elementary in Hoover, Alabama. Like many parents, I chose to raise my family in Hoover because of its reputation for strong schools. But what I’ve learned through personal experience is that behind that reputation, our schools are failing a significant group of students—those who struggle to read, especially those with dyslexia. Our district leadership—including board members and administrators—are making critical decisions about curriculum and instruction without a foundational understanding of dyslexia or evidence-based reading practices. This lack of knowledge and transparency causes real, lasting harm to students—not just academically, but emotionally. My son has experienced it firsthand, and sadly, so have countless other children in our community. Over the past year, I have been actively advocating for change. I’ve had ongoing conversations with our school, the special education department, the curriculum coordinator, the superintendent, and the assistant superintendent about the core reading curriculum used in Hoover City Schools. The trauma our struggling readers have is caused by a lack of proper, science-based reading instruction and it is avoidable. The damage has already been done to my child and many others, but it doesn’t have to continue. With the right resources and training, we can support our children now and prevent future harm. I created this group in hopes that families of struggling readers—those with and without dyslexia—will join me in calling for change. Yet leadership continues to look the other way. That’s why we must raise our voices together. THE SCIENCE OF READING IS CLEAR. WE KNOW HOW TO TEACH KIDS TO READ. NOW WE NEED THE COURGE AND LEADERSHIP TO DO IT. Every child deserves the chance to learn to read. Every voice matters. Join me in fighting for the resources, training, and accountability Hoover schools need—because every kid deserves a future built on literacy

For two years, Hoover families have been fighting to be heard. We’ve met with our Mayor, mayoral candidates, our Superintendent, curriculum teams, special education leadership, school administrators — anyone who would listen. We’ve sent countless emails and letters to our BOE, City Council, and even state-level leaders… most of them unanswered.

And yet, we kept showing up.
Because our kids are worth it.

Families are paying out of pocket for tutoring and services from Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) when these supports are already invested in and currently in place in our schools — but only for a select few of our kids. All because schools continue to rely on outdated methods that don’t work. The amount of money wasted on reactive measures is alarming.

The evidence is clear: what works for children with dyslexia works for ALL struggling readers. Literacy is a right — not a privilege reserved for the few who can afford outside help.

Our district’s solution has been to bring in outside CALTs for one child at a time… while hundreds of other kids fall further behind. We can do better. Our children deserve better.

Thank you to the legislators who are finally pushing for science-backed reading instruction and ending practices that harm our kids. This is leadership. This is hope.

And Hoover families will not stop until every child has the instruction, support, and dignity they deserve.

Some of the priority areas include education and health care issues.

Celebrating Growth, But Also Recognizing the Full Picture

Hoover Sun
“Greystone and Shades Mountain Elementary Schools were named i-Ready Super Stretch Schools for the second year in a row — an incredible achievement that recognizes extraordinary academic growth in reading and math.”

While this is something to celebrate, it’s also important to acknowledge what the data doesn’t show: our schools have the ability to adjust i-Ready levels and pacing for each student, and many of our families invest heavily in outside specialists, tutors, and Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT) to help our children succeed in both reading and math because our districts continue to rely on outdated methods that don’t work.

These additional supports play a major role in helping students reach their full potential — and this recognition reflects the combined efforts of teachers, families, and private specialists working together to meet each child’s needs.

The designation reflects extraordinary academic growth in reading and math.
