Calling All Amphibians! Pond's Open! 🐸

Slumbering all winter under thick ice, this male green frog welcomes an opportunity to surface and begin a new season in my large water garden.

In late fall American toads dig burrows below the frost line and emerge with warming early spring conditions to head to nearby ponds to breed. Within a few weeks, this male toad will return to the moist gardens surrounding my pond to dine on insects, helping me keep my plants healthy.

I am thrilled to see amphibian life again in my pond after a long, cold winter.

Fallen Logs: Nature's Nurseries 🪵

This birch tree, once reaching its slender limbs and oval leaves towards sunlight, collecting precious energy for new growth, now has the vital role of decomposing on the forest floor and recycling this energy for the next generation.

Many players, such as invertebrates, rain, and fungi all contribute to the process of breaking down the fibers and releasing essential nutrients.
Seeds landing on this fertile soil-in-progress, readily germinate, creating a new tree in the forest.

Nature's ultimate reduce-reuse-recycle strategy for a forest ecosystem's health.

Head out to a local woods and look for these nurse trees! 🌲

Nature's Gift Wrapping 🌱

Ingenious packaging of spring leaves and flower buds, produced last fall, keeps the tender foliage protected to withstand the harsh weather of winter months

Collecting sunlight through photosynthesis, sugars are stored in the roots. Some of this energy is used to create future leaves and flowers, enabling trees and shrubs to "spring" into action as soon as conditions are optimum.

A waxy coating encases the leaf and flower buds, keeping the fragile vegetation moist, avoiding burn from winter winds.

Try cutting forsythia sprigs in late winter, place in a vase of warm water indoors, and welcome spring on the earlier side! The pops of sunny yellow flowers are a feast for our winter-weary eyes!
