On my recent trip to Oakland, I decided not to take my journal. I thought to myself, I’ll just record voice memos or buy a new journal there. But that didn’t happen! When I didn’t have the ability to just write randomly, I didn’t like it. The place I stayed didn’t have any paper readily available, so I used this paper bag, and it worked just fine. The crinkly noise it makes works just fine too.

This was another insight that hit hard for me. I remember the moment during a group coaching call when I had the "aha." I started to see how my actions and thoughts were demonstrations of how invested I was in my own smallness. By not trying I wasn't giving myself the chance to generate self-belief.

I was completely shut down around posting on social media out of fear of criticism. And just last night I had a series of dreams where I couldn't get anyone to listen to me (being ignored is another fear of mine).

These self-perpetuated patterns are really tough to break. It takes constant practice in self-compassion, self-validation, self-attunement, and self-trust.

The good news is that just about every area of your life offers gorgeous materials and opportunities for practice in rewiring and repatterning how you relate to yourself.

Here are some examples:

🌹Tiny acts of self-care like making your bed each day
🌹Tiny acts of self-advocacy like sending back a meal at a restaurant
🌹Tiny acts of self-attunement like saying no to an invite when you crave connection but know that what you really need is rest
🌹Tiny acts of self-trust like reaching out and asking for help with a project
🌹Tiny acts of self-compassion like just putting a hand on your heart and feeling just how much it hurts

What are your tiniest acts? Drop a comment or send me a dm if this resonates.

For me, the superpower has been hypervigilance: always scanning the environment for what could be going wrong, for other people's unmet needs. As a woman, this came across as me having a high degree of empathy (or at least that's what ALL the personality tests told me). When I realized that this "empathy" was actually a trauma response (hypervigilance) masking as personality, I was floored.

This insight was a key moment in my healing journey because it exposed the ways that subtle messages filtered through workplace "self-improvement" programs were feeding me a lie about my "essence" based on socio-cultural (patriarchal) norms. I could see then that these messages where shaping how I thought about myself, my identity, my worth and usefulness.

Once you start to see this, you can't unsee it. From here you can start to rethink the question "Who am I?" and even begin to generate your own self-guided answers.

Now, I see my hypervigilance, which I don't experience very much anymore, as a strength and a core part of what I absolutely needed to do (unconsciously) in order to survive my childhood.

Now, rather than always feeling the anxiousness of my own people pleasing energy, I can feel other's energy loud and clear, knowing that it is theirs and not mine. I am able to come from a felt sense of discernment, rather than enmeshment.

The mind is not the boss of the body. Rather, they are in a constant conversation, sending and receiving information in a continuous loop.

Unmetabolized trauma results in that looping becoming lopsided. The nervous system is either too activated or not activated enough (shut down). Both top-down (mind-directed) and bottom-up (body-led) approaches are needed when healing trauma through nervous system work. This is a process of integration or coming into an experience of "bodymind" connection.

Isn't it interesting how someone had to coin the term "bodymind" because in English there isn't a word for it. Our very language is an expression of the fundamental separation between what we experience as mental vs. physical. What would our lives be like if we never even thought of the two as separate?

Healing is a very personal journey that must be self-led. However, that doesn't mean it should be DIY. We can't really do healing as a 100% solo journey. We need other bodies to help us learn how to experience ourselves differently, and ultimately, if your journey has led you to feel isolated and alone, it's all the more important to eventually find your way into a collective.

As you begin to heal, it will become much easier to enter into collective spaces and know whether its a healthy space for you. It will also become easier to maintain your own personal boundaries while in spaces that may not be for you.
