Join us for an informative workshop on growing and preserving apples, presented by Penn State Extension – Wayne County Master Gardeners. In this session, you'll learn how to select apple tree varieties that suit your needs, identify and manage common pests and diseases, and choose the best apples for preserving.

After the presentation, a Penn State Extension Master Food Preserver will demonstrate the safe preparation and water bath canning of applesauce. This will include an introduction to using a water bath canner for high-acid foods, such as fruits.

Participants will also explore common food preservation myths, understand why outdated methods are no longer recommended, and receive research-based guidance to preserve food safely and confidently at home.

🌱 Wayne County Manure Management Essentials 🚜

Yesterday, local farmers, conservation professionals, and agricultural educators gathered at Mignerey Farm for our Wayne County Manure Management Essentials program.

Participants learned about the farm's history and operation from Jim and Sara Mignerey and took part in a walking tour highlighting conservation practices and Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP) projects that were completed on their farm. Topics included heavy use area improvements, vegetative treatment areas, prescribed grazing, livestock pipelines, water control structures, and other best management practices designed to improve water quality and farm sustainability.

The morning also featured:

✅ Nutrient flows across forage systems and the connection between manure, soil health, and forage production
✅ Hands-on manure spreader calibration demonstrations
✅ Pasture nutrient balance and grazing management exercises

A big thank you to Jim & Sara for hosting us, and the Wayne Conservation District for partnering with us!
