Erotic Intelligence
I was at an outdoor concert recently with a friend of mine who is a psychologist. Somewhere between the music, laughter and movement around us, my attention settled on a couple dancing nearby.
They were completely absorbed in one another. Nothing overtly s*xual was happening, yet their bodies seemed to share a language of their own. She anticipated his movement, he felt hers, and between them lived that delicious current of two people exquisitely aware of the effect they were having on one another.
I watched for a moment and said, “You can tell he has skills in the bedroom to make her respond like that.”
My friend looked at me with immediate disapproval.
“All you talk about is s*x.”
I laughed, perhaps because I once knew that disapproval from the inside. I had learned to be intelligent, accomplished, spiritual and beautifully contained while carrying an enormous hunger for intensity within me.
Learning to trust that hunger became part of my healing.
I have always been drawn to depth, beauty, sensation, extraordinary conversation and those rare encounters that make the body suddenly become more awake. I notice the glance held a little too long, the almost imperceptible movement toward another, the warmth beneath an innocent conversation when both people know perfectly well there is another conversation happening underneath it.
Years of working within the deeper terrain of intimacy have refined that perception. The body is constantly communicating, and there is a beautiful skill in knowing how to listen. Presence, pacing, attention, anticipation; the sensitivity to feel another person's response and allow the moment to deepen. Seduction, in its most beautiful expression, is an exquisite attentiveness to what is unfolding between two people.
Perhaps that is why I noticed the dancers.
When you know this language, you recognize when someone else speaks it.
My own relationship with desire was earned through healing the wounds held within my s*xuality and learning to inhabit my body again. I discovered that hunger carries information. Sometimes it reveals something within us asking to heal. Sometimes it is attraction, gloriously alive. And sometimes it is simply life-force arriving with tremendous intensity, looking for somewhere beautiful to flow.
I learned to give it somewhere to go.
Desire began moving into creativity, sensuality, discernment, intimacy and the courage to follow what felt deeply true. I discovered how much passion we can hold when we become spacious enough to remain present within our own intensity.
This is erotic intelligence.
It is knowing the language of our own aliveness well enough to feel deeply, remain curious, become exquisitely attentive to another and still belong completely to ourselves. It allows attraction to breathe. A glance can be delicious. Chemistry can linger. Someone can fascinate us. An innocent conversation can send the imagination wandering somewhere decidedly less innocent, and we can quietly smile at ourselves and enjoy being alive.
The mystics and yogis understood something profound about this current: life-force wants movement. It flows through s*xuality, creativity, intuition, devotion, healing and the mysterious impulse that continually draws us toward fuller expressions of ourselves.
Perhaps our hunger has never been asking simply to be satisfied.
It is asking to be listened to, to become refined, and to become purposeful movement.
What I saw between them was something I have come to deeply appreciate; the beauty of two people alive enough within themselves to create intensity together. A private language of attention, responsiveness, desire and presence that the body understands without explanation.
This is what our hunger has been asking of us all along: to become intimate enough with our own aliveness that we can recognize what moves us, trust the intelligence within it, and give that energy somewhere beautiful to go.
Of course, I still maintain that the dancer likely has skills.
My psychologist friend can chastise me later.
Some things are simply too delicious not to notice.
