Spring was in the air “mingled with the scent of a cool ocean breeze”,
Many travelers and emigrants had left their homeland for America, from the Liverpool port in mid-Victorian England. Benjamin Norman in May of 1882 sailed from this point forward crossing the Atlantic, arriving in the U.S. (7-10) days later. Ben, a stocky Englishman of Saxon descent and ancient Norman stock soon discovers, that

Sadly-Oldest House demolished @ Spokane House Little Spokane River-Side state Park.

Laurel Clark Tomsha this was my grandparent's home and barns, would have been nice to know about this before it was bulldozed, lots of wonderful memories there - so sad 😢

Birchwood Farm Co . The bulldozing of the old historic site, sadly went off without a hitch, nobody was the wiser, except for a few, that were paying attention, even the media did not talk about it, but knew about it, 'Birchwood Farm' really is one of Spokane's best-kept secret's.

John Ashley Laurel Clark Tomsha I knew your grandparents in the late 80's and into early 90's. My wife, son and I have a lot of memories.
Birchwood Farm Co . Author Birchwood Farm Co . Are the "BIRCHWOOD FARM BARNS" next? Because there in poor condition, to and it would cost more to fix them than an old house?

June 12, 1897 The Dillon Tribune reported: “Saturday, June 12, 1897, the “A. F. Graeter,’ the third and the largest of the gold dredges now operating on Grasshopper Creek near Bannack, was christened with interesting ceremonies and was started on its mission of recovering gold from the rich alluvial deposits of the creek. The boat is operated by the Bannack Dredging Company of which H. J. Reiling is president.
Mr. Reiling gave a speech and after the cheering subsided, Mrs. L. C. Bonney, of Chicago, the wife of the treasurer of the company, was assisted to a place upon the huge buckets, and raising a bottle of champagne into the air and saying, ‘I christen this boat in the name of A. F. Graeter,’ broke the bottle and sprinkled the sparkling fluid upon the line of buckets that were destined to dig untold wealth from the creek bed.”
This dredge was considered state of the art at the time and operated into 1902. The Graeter worked the ground from Marysville up stream to Bannack then reworked the ground that the Graves had previously worked. The Graeter was considerably larger and could dig deeper than the Graves allowing it to reach gravels previously missed. This dredge burned eight cords of wood a day. The wood was hauled from West Mountain twelve miles away and during the dredging period many men were employed cutting wood for the boilers of this and the other wood-fired dredges. TL

Grub Gulch, Madera County, California.
"Gold Fever" hit the streams in Madera County in 1849. Grub Gulch got its name from the fact that "miners could always pan enough gold from the river to grubstake themselves into better times."
Grub Gulch developed after the Gambetta Mine opened in 1880. Other local mines included the Mammoth Mine, the Enterprise Mine, and the Josephine Mine.
Local legend says the peak population reached 5000. In its time there were two hotels, a rooming house, five saloons, a grocery store, and a general merchandise store, but never a church.
Grub Gulch was burned down in 1920.

Riverside State Park Foundation Thanks for the photo,Ted Moon. Not many people know what area of the park this is in. Appearances can be deceiving not obvious at first, but under closer scrutiny, the history/story has been hidden behind a façade of a farmhouse. Ben Norman entertained 'Friends' in the private club under the guise of the Norman Ranch, which you know as the Clark barns; In truth “Birchwood Farm” situated opposite Spokane House/HBC drawing attention away from a tight-knit corporation that you’re not supposed to know about. For the most part the company has been largely overlooked by historians. In so doing, they have missed the boat. The fact is, the better-known Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), incorporated in 1670, overshadows the Birchwood Farm Company (BFC). No longer a secret history ~ BIRCHWOOD FARM GROVE book 2017 ~ Unveils an untold Spokane story, that should have been told years ago.

Birchwood Still-Secret

Welcome to the Birchwood Farm Co. page! We are researchers and co-author's who live in Spokane, Washington. A research quest began in 1983, the moment Edward let the cat out of the bag, revealing twin (BFC ) secret stock-certificate's. That got us interested in “scripophily”, and we began writing our first - 1989 Birchwood Farm Co. manuscript on an old typewriter. Our BIRCHWOOD FARM GROVE 2017 book available on Amazon, is a coherent narrative; the end result into the study of an economic history, exposing a financial paradox, and bank panic, and so much more.
