This March we had the pleasure of welcoming 12 "blue butt" pigs onto the Student Organic Farm! These pigs are being fed food that can no longer be distributed from the Greater Lansing Food Bank (while being supplemented with readily available grain feed), in hopes of cutting down food waste and promoting sustainability! Our team of students has been working with Dr. Dale Rozeboom and Dr. Laurie Thorp for this project, and have made great strides in learning about animal husbandry and their role in food systems!🐖🐷

It's that time of year! The SOF and MSU students have 12 Yorkshire X PIC327 crossbred barrows for pork sale. We are selling halves and wholes for $2.25/lb hanging. This year, we are neither “organic” nor “GMO-free,” though our system is both humane and attentive to animal health and well-being. Estimating the entire economic and environmental cost of this approach is the student aim of 2017 related to animal agriculture. Message us with your pork inquiries.

The pigs have arrived! Our team worked diligently this past week to prepare for their arrival on Friday. We welcomed 12 pigs to the Thorp Sow House, and they are adjusting wonderfully. Welcome to the SOF, pigs!

It's that time of year! RISE is looking to establish a team of dedicated students wishing to learn more about small scale pork production and develop a deeper connection to food system work and animal care. Attached is a link to the application that you may print and fill out. Please direct all questions to Haley Fulco or Victoria Chapman regarding the application process or general Pig Team questions. The application is due 2 WEEKS from today (Monday December 12th) to either Haley or Victoria. The team will be finalized during finals week or the first week back in January.

It's a beautiful fall Michigan day today...the boys are leaving us this afternoon, and they have spent the morning in sunshine and cool air with lots of apple treats. Minimal stress loading of course, and two of them took it upon themselves to load up on their own. Load day is always a sad day, as we say goodbye, but we humans keep our spirits high in the face of this, and the pigs as calm and loved as we can.

We have been getting a lot of rain over the last couple weeks at the farm, and the boys have their own oasis as a result. Pigs love water, and this morning they showcased their interest by foraging in the deep watery muck for all sorts of breakfast goodies.

Today was the last day at the farm for Violet and Pearl, but I sure do think they are happy pigs, giving a good yawn and stretch at sunrise. So much love.
