Last night Holland City Council approved a five-year contract with Axon Enterprises to purchase cameras and taser equipment to include, but not limited to, body-worn cameras, automated license-plate readers, fixed pole-mounted cameras, as well as software, licenses, installation, warranty, and services.
Supporting community, with the ability to enjoy or feel secure in the resources, services, and protections the City of Holland provides, is as important as equipping the departments and staff of the city to do so.
Be it budget considerations, equipment, professional development, etc. our quality of life and the unfettered pursuit of it, require as much.
Therein lies the balance.
An article from Bridge Magazine titled “...Big Help or Big Brother”? shares the difficulty of local municipalities developing or creating policies and procedures without statewide legislation or guidance, as well as the responsibilities of communities to both protected individual privacy, and the collective “protect and serve” of everyone who lives, works, or visits Holland.
I look forward to continuing the conversation with my colleagues and ensuring that we continue to provide the quality services that all our city departments do, with the oversight that public service and resident input, requires.
