When the Wilmington Learning Collaborative talks about reimagining the school day, coding is one of the very first opportunities they mention — experiences students might otherwise only encounter through an after-school program.

That’s exactly why initiatives like We Rise Wednesdays at Lewis Dual Language Elementary School and Magical Mondays at Harlan Elementary School matter so much.

Through initiatives like these, Kai Coders has the incredible privilege of serving every single student at these schools— bringing technology and creative computing right into the school day.

And while, yes, we teach coding, what we’re really building goes far beyond code.

💡 Curiosity to ask “What if?”
🛠️ Confidence to try, make mistakes, debug and try again.
✨ Exposure to people and possibilities across STEM.
💙 And most importantly, the belief: “I belong in tech, too.”

We are so grateful to WLC, Lewis, Harlan, Warner Elementary School and the educators who have trusted us to be part of creating that kind of access for their students.

Because you shouldn’t have to already know you love technology — or sign up for an after-school coding class — to get the chance to discover that you might. 💙

We’re about to get a little techie with you on today’s post… 🤓💻 But stick with us, because this one is pretty interesting!

One of our Kai Coders coaches, Jadyn Worthington, who is also a professional software developer, recently shared a thought-provoking post about an AI experiment where agents were given a goal—and, in trying to achieve it, went way beyond what the humans intended.

And we LOVE this! Not the AI going rogue-ish part. 😂 We love seeing our coaches thinking critically about emerging technology—not just what can it do? but what could go wrong?

The timing was perfect because Coach Bledsoe and Coach Park are currently doing AI-focused professional development with educators from around the world, and this was exactly a point they raised in class today.

As we start talking about AI agents that can help educators work more efficiently, we can’t just ask: “What do I want this AI to accomplish?”

We also need to ask: “What is it NEVER allowed to sacrifice to get there?”

Because faster and more efficient doesn’t always mean better—especially in education, where human judgment, relationships, creativity, and kids actually doing the thinking still matter. ❤️

And this is exactly why we put emerging tech under a microscope ourselves. We want our students to experience the excitement and possibilities of powerful tech tools while also learning to recognize the pitfalls, question the output, and think critically about how those tools are being used.

That’s a big part of what we mean when we say we want kids to become creators—not just consumers. 🌊💻

Partner Spotlight: North Star Elementary 🐻‍❄️💙

One thing we love about North Star is the strong sense of community — and their PTA found such a fun way to keep that going all summer!

Their Postcards from Polaris series follows Polaris, North Star’s polar bear mascot, as teachers, students, and their families share photos and little updates from their summer adventures. ☀️✈️🏖️

Such a simple, creative way to stay connected even when school isn’t in session.

We’re excited to be heading back to North Star this fall for another year of Kai Coders adventures!

Happy National Spam Musubi Day! 🍙🌺

Last week, we had a super fun session where the OctoStudio team taught some of their newest features—including making your own sprite by taking a picture and adding costumes to it.

We grabbed whatever was close at hand and took a quick pic. We didn’t have a cute stuffy nearby, though—for us, it was a can of Hello Kitty SPAM. 😂

We originally bought it to tuck into some fun STEM giveaway baskets. We definitely did not expect that one day we'd end up coding it. But here we are. 😄

It doesn’t have to be perfect—or even have a purpose. Sometimes creating just because you can is exactly the point. ✨

We LOOOVE the Chinese Festival! ❤️🐉

The authentic food, beautiful culture, and incredible entertainment make this one of our favorite community events each year. The dragon and lion dances are amazing, the kids’ Chinese yo-yo demonstrations show so much skill and practice, and of course, we love joining in (or maybe just happily watching and cheering) the group dancing!

At Kai Coders, we’re always inspired by creativity, teamwork, tradition, and people sharing what they love with their community—and the Chinese Festival brings all of that together under one big tent.

📍 Chinese American Community Center, at the corner of Valley Road and Little Baltimore Road

What if a tree could bloom with LEGO bricks? 🌳🌸

One of our coaches spotted this incredible LEGO Botanical Tree during a trip to Mystic, Connecticut—and it felt very Kai Coders!

Every flower, vine, and tiny detail was created one brick at a time. It’s a wonderful reminder of what can happen when creativity, design, engineering, and a little “What if…?” thinking all grow together. 💡

What does a Kai Coders camp look like? A little coding, maybe some robotics - bug DEFINITLEY lots of creativity, hands-on building, new friends, laughter—and usually a little mess. 😊

Our STEAM Quest Lab is happening August 24–28 right here in Hockessin for students entering grades 2–5. It’s a fun way to enjoy one more week of summer while gently getting those brains back into learning mode before Red Clay Schools begin!
