The Smallest Prayer

My grandmother said the heart needs little
to remember why it was given.
A single kindness, carried faithfully,
can outlive the longest season.

The old ones taught us to move gently,
for every life drinks from the same rain.
What we gather should become a blessing;
what we love should never become a cage.

There are messengers too small for thunder,
yet strong enough to awaken the spirit.
They remind us that joy is sacred work,
and hope may arrive on quiet wings.

I keep their lesson close within me:
take only what the earth can spare,
leave sweetness wherever you travel,
and trust the Great Mystery with tomorrow.

When my path returns to the ancestors,
may they know me by the good I carried—
not by how loudly I crossed this world,
but by how gently I helped it bloom.
