The Grants Office is hosting an information session on the Critical Language Scholarship program for students interested in fully funded study abroad programs in Summer 2023. We'll host guest speakers, including a former CLS awardee, who will provide insights into the application process.
The Critical Language Scholarship Program is accepting applications for study abroad opportunities in Summer 2023. The application deadline is Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. HST.

CLS funds study abroad for languages taught at Kapi‘olani, although some will require prior study as a prerequisite.

CHINESE • Intermediate: Minimum requirement: completion of two years of college-level Chinese, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program. • Advanced: Minimum requirement: completion of three years of college-level Chinese, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program.
JAPANESE • Intermediate: Minimum requirement: completion of two years of college-level Japanese, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program. • Advanced: Minimum requirement: completion of three years of college-level Japanese, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program.
KOREAN • Advanced Beginning: Minimum requirement: completion of one year of college-level Korean, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program. • Intermediate: Minimum requirement: completion of two years of college-level Korean, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program. • Advanced: Minimum requirement: completion of three years of college-level Korean, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program.
No prior experience is required for Urdu, Swahili, Turkish, Punjabi, Persian, Indonesian, Hindi, Bangla, and Azerbaijani.

Students will learn from university faculty and guest speakers from partner institutions on various aspects of Okinawa, such as protection and sustainable use of the environment, responsible consumption and production, and quality of education, etc.
The program will also offer the opportunity for online cultural immersion experiences such as online student exchange activities and SDGs virtual tour on Okinawa.
