A little snippet from today’s newsletter...something that’s been sitting with me lately, both as a coach and a mom.
If you’re not on my email list and want more support around raising confident girls, send me a DM and I’ll add you.
Our minds naturally focus on what’s wrong far more than what’s right. It’s called a negativity bias, and it’s part of how our brains are wired to keep us safe. Despite all the modern advances, our brains still operate like we are cave people.
The cave person looking at the flowers might miss the lion lurking in the bushes (and become that lion’s lunch). Negativity bias ensures we are always on the lookout for dangers and threats.
As parents, this can look like fixating on where our kids are missing the mark far more than where they are thriving. We do this from a place of fierce protection and love, but it doesn’t help with connection.
And connection is key for confidence.
So this week, try this small shift:
When you catch yourself focusing on what needs improvement, pause and deliberately look for what’s going right.
🩷 Where are they growing?
🩷 Where are they trying?
🩷 Where are they showing up (even in small ways)?
Notice. And then TELL them.
So often our kids look at themselves through OUR lens. Be sure you are offering them one that helps them see all their gifts and goodness.
