Next… I have to mention my younger brother, Chaplain Clint Tompkins. Clint has showed up to watch the wrestlers the last two seasons as much as he could and quickly fell in love with the sport of wrestling. As a former collegiate athlete (Track and Cross Country)… Clint loves competition! He often wears an OD green shirt at the meets that says, “How can I pray for you?” Before each meet, during, or after he made himself available for a team or individual prayer. As an officer and Military Chaplain in the WV Army Guard (prior Marine), his prayers are battled tested and have me ready to run through a wall when we say “Amen”. Not the usual civilian prayer…it’s just different. Wrestling is a 6 minute battle and Clint provides the word we all need to hear! Love ya Bro!

Today I’ve gotta make a post when we make a little sports history for our school wrestling program. It might seem small to some people, but it’s a big deal to me. This is what we work towards all season long!

Cruz and Roop earned this by winning matches at the State Tournament and that’s what got them this mention. Regionals at Hoover is basically our playoffs… and once we’re in Huntington… that’s our sports’ championship “game”, if you will.

Making the podium is nothing to sneeze at. As you view the past Trail state placers/All-Staters… the list is not very long. I’m pumped we had two make the podium in the same season!

Next up… The Theo Bell, sophomore wrestler. Theo wrestled in the 113 lb weight class this year. I’ve been asked a lot after regionals, “Where’s Theo”? Knowing Theo, I know he wouldn’t mind me saying he didn’t make weight at regionals (it happens). Had he made weight, Trail would have had an 8th state qualifier. I was confident he’d qualify.

Theo has been a joy to coach these last two seasons. He makes me smile every practice… so quick witted! He’s a competitor!

Next up… Junior wrestler, Ian Hiser! Ian competed in the 165 lb weight class this year. His season was cut short after suffering a shoulder injury wrestling an opponent from Wahama back in late January at Roane Co.

Ian is a great kid! He’s a ball of muscle and always wrestles 100 mph! He’s quiet, humble, and such a worker!

Next up… Senior wrestler, Dakota Bennett! Kota wrestled in the 175 lb weight class for Trail this year. Kota battled through the season with a shoulder injury all season.

I vividly remember a football game this year where Kota (kicker/punter) made a clutch tackle (we call that a double leg in wrestling) on a kickoff return that saved a touchdown! The announcers seemed surprised it was the kicker who made the play. My first thought was… of course he did. He’s a wrestler!

Kota is a class act and top notch teammate who always brings his smile with him.

Female State Qualifier, Emma Boley (165 lb) the lone female wrestler on the team.

With 12 days notice… we were informed of the first ever girls Regionals. As always, you have to go with the flow in this sport. Emma showed up and did her thing… placing 6th (top 8 advance to states).

In the girls division it’s AAAA, AAA, AA, and A all competing together. As the numbers grow for females in this sport (and they will)… this will probably change.

At the State Tournament, Emma pinned two girls from Wheeling Park, lost to a girl from GW, and lost her final match in the 3rd period to an opponent from Oak Hill. All of her opponents were in AAAA.

I couldn’t be more proud of this kid! I’ve said it before, she’s humble, works hard in practice, and just a great kid! Going 2-2 at the State Tournament is a success in my eyes! Way to go Emma!

Freshman State Qualifiers… Luke Sheets (150 lb) and Phillip Beverage (157 lb). When you are a freshman wrestling in the middle weights… it tends to be upperclassmen heavy. To me, that’s quite an accomplishment to be state qualifiers.

Luke is now the 5th freshman in MTHS wrestling history (32 years of having a wrestling team) to join what we call the “Freshman 30 Win Club”. He’s only the 5th freshman to reach 30 wins (32) in a season. Luke has wrestled his tail off this year and has grown as a wrestler from the start of the season to the end. He’a a joy to coach. Whether he has a state champ or an average wrestler as his opponent… he treats them no different and could care less how good his opponent is supposed to be… always gives it his all! “Yeah”.

Phillip Beverage started getting in the groove around mid season and put some wins together… confidence started to set in. There’s not a kid in the practice room he won’t drill with… no matter their weight class! He’s chatty and has never met a stranger at the tournaments we attend.

Hang your head high, fellas! Proud of your freshman season accomplishments!

2026 Senior State Qualifiers, Brayden Moore (144 lb) and Kordell Brown (HWT).

These two have wrestled all 4 years. I can tell you they love wrestling, having a good time, and laughing together… great friends to each other.

Brayden lost a heartbreaker on day 2 that we’d all love to have back! Brayden has had a solid career as a Midland Trail wrestler and has improved each season. He’s been so exciting to watch grow as a wrestler and pull off what he does on the mat!

Kordell won his second match during the Friday morning session
vs an opponent from St. Mary’s to stay alive in the tournament. That evening he lost to an opponent from Logan. Kordell has been a solid HWT for Trail all 4 years. Everyone that knows Kordell, knows he’s an athletic big man! Great 4 year run as a Trail wrestler!

Very proud of both of these young men!
