7 Habits of Organized Students
By Kristopher Heaton, Premier Tutor with Tutoring For Success
Academic success and personal well-being share one standard key: staying organized. The ease with which it's achieved isn't a constant, but it can become as easy as doing it in your sleep. That's the power of habit. Here are seven habits organized students can and should develop to manage their tasks, time, and materials effectively and efficiently:
1. Set clear goals.
2. Create a routine to follow.
3. Keep an organized workspace.
4. Use a planner or calendar.
5. Prioritize tasks.
6. Stay consistent with study sessions.
7. Review and reflect regularly.

During the past several years, teachers at every level have been assigning fewer books and more excerpts instead. I believe that students should read whole books, especially fiction. Reading fiction and routing for a character teaches empathy and appreciation of different cultures and walks of life. If you choose the right book, reading it can transport you to another world, providing ultimate relaxation. Reading for pleasure automatically improves fluency, writing skills, critical thinking, and self-reflection, in addition to preparing students for college. As Thanksgiving weekend approaches, many of us look forward to relaxing dinners with extended families, time off from school and work, and the beginning of the holiday bustle. This year, why not extend the comradery going forward? Why not continue having family meals and expressing gratitude? This may be more challenging during the school year, but with some effort and schedule management, it can usually be arranged for at least a few days per week. Visit our blog to see what family dinners can look like: https://tutoringforsuccess.us/blog/
Does your child have difficulty holding attention to tasks that are not of interest? Does he struggle with listening to instructions, following through on instructions, or completing homework or chores? Does she often interrupt or have difficulty remaining seated? There are three types of ADHD: Inattentive Type, Hyperactive/Impulsive Type, and Combined presentation. This chart is the most recent DSM-5 Diagnostic criteria for ADHD. If your child has six or more symptoms of either type and these symptoms impede success with schoolwork, family engagement, and social life, it may be time to speak to a health professional about evaluating them for ADHD. September is National Literacy Month! We at Tutoring For Success would like to call attention to the importance of attaining fluency in reading and expertise in writing for school, work, and life. The best way to achieve literacy success is to read regularly, including reading for pleasure. Daily reading effortlessly improves writing skills because while reading, one absorbs the rules of grammar, spelling, word choice, and paragraph structure for future writing endeavors.
Looking back on the Pandemic four years ago, every one of us had to shift our life experiences.
So where are we now? During this past academic year, I regularly heard from parents that their children had major gaps resulting from the year they missed. Some students missed a crucial course like Algebra, and then didn't have the skills to do the next level of math. Other students missed a year of writing and never learned important grammatical concepts, like when to use apostrophes and commas, or the difference between a complete sentence and a fragment. Some students never learned about the three branches of government in the United States and then moved on to the next class, still never understanding about our government's checks and balances.
Now that we have just begun a new academic year, it is time to look these gaps in the eye and fill them in. I recommend serious parent monitoring. This is what is looks like:

Do your children spend a lot of time with social media? Are you worried about increased use in the idle hours of summer? Have you tried to limit phone use with great resistance? A Pew Research survey that was conducted Sept. 26-Oct. 23, 2023, among 1,453 13- to 17-year-olds, covered social media, internet use and device ownership among teens. They found that 90% of teens use YouTube regularly, and “majorities of teens ages 13 to 17 say they use TikTok (63%), Snapchat (60%) and Instagram (59%). For older teens ages 15 to 17, these shares are about seven-in-ten.” More concerning, nearly 1 in 5 teens reported that they use YouTube or TikTok “almost constantly.” Source: Pew Research Center
The American Psychological Association recently published a Health Advisory on Social Media use in Adolescence with some guidelines for parents. These recommendations are based on scientific evidence and interviews of experts:
