🚨 Instead of cram sessions or long study sessions, try this...
⠀
Help your child study in small, but consistent, time blocks.
⠀
I have found that MOST high schoolers aren't able to maintain focus for more than 30-60 minutes alone (without a study group or a tutor).
So, instead of having your child sit down and study for hours or cram for the SAT, consider encouraging them to study without distraction for just 30 minutes and then remind them to have a break of 10 minutes or so.
⠀
For most students, this is going to be much more beneficial than struggling to focus for hours on end.

Weekly schedules aren't just for adults!
⠀
A rough weekly schedule can be an incredibly useful tool for college-bound students.
⠀
Here's what I recommend you try:
- have your child make a list of commitments and events they have on an average week,
- estimate the time required for each day (e.g. Monday may only have one hour to study, but Wednesday is free) - together with your student,
- have them create a weekly study calendar that makes sense for their schedule,
- and add 5-minute breaks every 20-30 minutes and rest/fun time slots to recharge.
⠀
It might look something like this:
Monday 3pm - 3:25pm Math practice,
5-min break,
3:30pm - 3:55pm Reading practice,
Rest;
Tuesday 4:00pm - 4:25pm Writing practice,
5 min break,
4:30pm - 4:55 Science ACT practice, etc.
This will not only help them avoid having unrealistic expectations (e.g. "I will complete one practice test every day!") and being stressed about studying for the SAT & ACT, but also helps them build a great habit of a successful student!

HERE'S THE ISSUE:
Many parents decide to buy a prep course or hire a tutor when the SAT or ACT date is around the corner, which may sound like it makes sense!
However, by the time they seek out test prep support, it is often too late for their child to raise their score considerably.
I know this is something most students and parents want to put off, but this is a major mistake!
It is much easier to start test prep at least a few months before the SAT or ACT date.
Although it isn't impossible to get your child to where they need to be if they need a big score bump, it just takes much more work and time.

MY 5 MINUTES A DAY RULE
Does your child take the time to talk about daily insights from their SAT study? I recommend all my students do this every day after a study session…
Oftentimes, we are so caught up in our note-taking, solving, and reading new material that we can easily forget what we learned in a particular study session!
This is why EVERY high schooler needs to take just 5-10 minutes at the end of each lesson and just try to say out loud what they learned. No peeking into the notes or books!
This will help create stronger neural pathways, solidify what they learned and help them remember, so when the Test day comes… They are more prepared and confident!
You can make excuses, or you can make it happen! LIKE this post if you agree 👊

HOW TO TURN YOUR GOOD GRADES INTO HIGH TEST SCORES
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into visible” This quote is so true!
When I was in school, I had good grades, but couldn’t quite figure out how to turn them into a competitive (see: Top 1%) test score…
Here’s what helped everything become more manageable and even... fun!
Daily goals! I would create daily goals for myself like:
1) I will work on my Math practice for 1 hour today without distractions
2) I will take one section of a practice test for an hour
3) I will read three essays and their score analysis (back when there was an essay in the test)
4) I will put my phone away in the other room so I can focus
What is a goal you are going to reach this week? Let me know in the comments =)

If your child is a Junior and is taking their PSAT/NMSQT this year, see tip #5!
My advice to Juniors in October though: start your SAT or ACT prep now and get the best possible score.
But if your kiddo is in 10th grade and wants to capitalize on the National Merit benefits next year, the whole post is 🔥🔥🔥
-----------------------------------------
Here are a few tips to help your child prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT exam better next year:
1️⃣ KNOW THE TEST FORMAT AND CONTENT.
Familiarize yourself with the types of questions that will be on the exam and the content areas that will be tested. This will help you focus your study and better prepare for the exam.
2️⃣ CREATE A GOOD STUDY SCHEDULE.
Give yourself plenty of time to study by creating a study schedule in advance. Make sure to allow for breaks and to review material regularly.
3️⃣ UTILIZE PRACTICE TESTS.
In order to gauge your progress and get comfortable with the exam format, take practice tests. There are many resources available online and in print.
4️⃣ GET PLENTY OF REST.
The night before the exam, get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. This will help you feel refreshed and ready to do your best.
5️⃣ RELAX AND DO YOUR BEST.
On the day of the exam, take a deep breath and relax. Remember that you have prepared well and just do your best.
Share these tips with your child to give them a head start!
