The ancient tertiary rivers of California have yielded many millions of ounces of gold. This is a map of those long dead gold rivers. Long ago, volcanic eruptions buried the existing rivers of the Sierra Nevada gold country. Most of these eruptions were similar to the explosive eruption of Mount St. Helens and the volcanic ash buried millions of square miles of the Sierra. The whole mountain range was uplifted and new river drainages formed - these are the current rivers and streams. It is in the spots where sections of these ancient gold rivers still remain that the miners did their hydraulic mining.
