✨ Student Spotlight ✨

We are proud to spotlight Ava Davis, Junior Dance major and President of , the newest and first hip hop based social and dance club on campus.

Founded in Fall 2025, Ava launched Street Soulz Collective alongside an entirely POC executive board with the vision of creating a space rooted in culture, community, and movement.

As Ava shared while introducing herself and the club, hip hop culture is deeply intertwined with Black history and identity. It is more than dance. It is storytelling, resistance, expression, and a powerful glue that connects and uplifts our communities.

Through Street Soulz Collective, Ava is building a space where culture is honored, voices are amplified, and students can come together through rhythm, creativity, and shared experience.

✨ FACULTY SPOTLIGHT | BLACK HISTORY MONTH ✨

“We can’t know how American we are until we know how Black we are.”

As part of our ongoing Black History Month Faculty Spotlight Series, we are honored to feature Dyane Harvey Salaam, Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Drama and Dance at Hofstra University.

A recent Lifetime Achievement Award recipient at the Bessie Awards, Professor Salaam brings a profound depth of artistry, scholarship, and cultural leadership to both Hofstra and the broader arts community. She teaches a variety of courses that challenge students to engage performance as history, resistance, and living practice. Beyond campus, she remains actively involved in impactful creative projects that continue to shape the field.

In this conversation, she shares her reflections on Black History Month, speaks to the importance of understanding Black identity as central to the American narrative, and uplifts two influential figures she encourages us to explore.

This feature is longer than our usual spotlights — and intentionally so. We encourage you to take the time to watch in full and sit with the richness, depth, and insight she offers.

From St. Lucia to Hofstra, Desray K. Desir embodies leadership, purpose, and global perspective. As the current Graduate Resident Director of Colonial Square and a master’s student in Health Informatics, Desray is making an impact both inside and outside the classroom.
