Jenny Needs An Encourager
Jenny, a junior attorney in a large law firm in Western Tennessee, recently discovered how to be her best friend instead of her worst enemy by not allowing the negative thoughts to stay in her mind producing negative feelings.

It was beginning to working. She wasn’t as down on herself as she had been. She was learning how to change her negative critical inner voice to make it more positive. But, it seemed like every time she became stressed with a new case she would revert back to her old self, telling herself she couldn’t do anything right.

Irene, the librarian at the law library took her under her wing being her encourager, telling her she could do this, helping her with breathing and relaxation techniques. She also started helping her face her emotions.

Body Shaming
Hearing the conversation at the next booth, Gracie’s thoughts went back to her own experience ten years before when she was in college. She had always been on the chunky side, but it never really bothered her.

Two young women talking. One said, “I have to lose weight. At size 12 I’m never going to get a date. Look at you, size 5 looks great on you. How did you do it? I’ll never get a date for the prom looking like a ‘fat pig’”.

Dennis, her best friend since kindergarten, had grown up next door. All through school they had done everything together, actually just like a brother and sister. They even chose the same college to attend.

Your Thoughts Become Your Words Which Become Your Behavior
“How can my words be used to create my future? How are word seeds planted?” Gracie said. “I just don’t get it.”
Gracie, a woman in her mid-40s, had heard her pastor say the above in one of his sermons. She just couldn’t shake the thought that her words were creating her future.

Seeds planted during childhood
She grew up in a middle-class home in the mid-west, an only child, born to parents in their late 30s. Mom was a career woman, a nurse, well before it was popular for women to have careers. Her parents owned and managed a nursing home for the elderly and those with serious illnesses who needed continuous care. The family lived in the basement of the nursing home.
Because her parents worked 18 hours per day caring for the patients, playtime was rarely included in their lives. So Gracie grew up playing and studying in the kitchen of the nursing home or in one of the sitting rooms with the patients.

Did you know that your future can be foretold by the words you speak and thoughts you think? I can tell you don't believe me. Read the story about Matilda then we'll see what you think.
By the way, have you heard the term “sour grapes”?

A person’s behavior, expression, or opinion can be termed “sour grapes” when the person is angry because they haven’t or aren’t getting what they want when they want it.

Matilda had often been referred to as sour grapes by her co-workers and especially by those under her in the accounting department.

The department heads in the company were going to a conference in New York City. They all met at the airport about three hours before their flight for an impromptu meeting called by the CEO.

"Is everyone here?" asked the CEO.

"Of course not," someone yelled. "Sour grapes isn't here." You could hear hushed giggles in the background.

"I'm here," she yelled breathlessly as she approached the group.

People, in general, think faster than they talk. For all of us, it's hard to listen, especially if the speaker is slower in finishing his thought. The ADHD Adult Fast Brain runs even faster creating even more communication problems. They often get sidetracked in their own thoughts or get very impatient with the speaker. This causes them to run ahead assuming what the speaker is going to say.

Waiting for the other person to finish speaking can be unbearable for some ADHD adults. This is especially true if the speaker does not seem to understand the nature of the subject.

If the ADHD adult thinks the speaker is critical, they may interrupt or talk over the speaker, hijacking the conversation.

Like many other ADHD adults, Dennis had trouble staying focused when others were speaking. He was always very quick to assess the other person's tone or attitude and react according to his assessment.

Jenny’s Self-Awareness
As you’ve read in my last posts, Jenny is a junior attorney in a large law firm in Western Tennessee. Recently she had discovered that she was not her own best friend. Instead, she was her own worst enemy. She didn’t seem to have a kind word to say about herself or anyone else, for that matter. She always saw the dark side.

“Nothing ever seems to go right for me, these days,” she said out loud to herself remembering her first solo case that she had to hand off to her boss. “I’m so glad he didn’t fire me over it. You’ve participated in numerous cases just like it, why couldn’t you do it solo? Are you just a scardy-cat? I know you aren’t stupid so what’s your problem? Her critical inner voice just kept haranguing her until she put her hands over her ears and yelled, “Stop It.”

She looked up. Instantly embarrassed. She looked around. Everyone in the library was looking at her. She put her finger up to her lips for silence then lowered her head to her hands.

Jenny’s Morning Dialogue
Jenny’s alarm went off. She hit the snooze button and rolled over for a few more minutes of sleep. It was only a few seconds until she sat straight up in bed with self-talk.

“Oh, no!!! I forgot to call the phone company yesterday. I can’t believe they are expecting me to pay so much for my cell phone - $350, for one month. I don’t know how I’m going to handle that kind of payment.

She ran into the kitchen, picked up her phone, and dialed 611.

“Five minutes later, the customer service rep must think I have nothing else to do, but chit-chat with her,” Jenny said in her mind as he looked at the clock on the stove.

“Is there anything you can do about the bill? I’m not sure I can cover the whole amount,” Jenny said to the rep.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, there’s nothing I can do,” the rep responded.

“Okay, I see.

It has been determined that ADHD is not a lack of or deficiency in attention. It is a problem with the ability to regulate attention and activity. Those with ADHD struggle with how and when to switch on and off their focus.

Experts have said the executive function is like the train conductor of the brain’s activity. If the conductor doesn’t do his job there will be a train wreck of some kind.

ADHD Revealed
Gracie and Dennis, an average young newlywed couple, were faced with challenges they had never anticipated when Dennis finally revealed that in high school he had been diagnosed with ADHD.
They had lived across the street from each other all through high school. The ADHD subject had never come up until one day on their way to dinner Dennis completely lost it when a car cut them off.
Gracie was stunned and instantly afraid of Dennis. She had never seen that side of him.
It was after that Gracie began to notice that Dennis had times when he was not present in a conversation.

Dark World
Jeremy thought about his discussion with his counselor while sitting on the bench in the school courtyard. She had brought a little light into his seemingly very dark shadow world. She said everybody is different it didn’t matter if I had ADHD or not. We’re all different.

“If that is true why does my world feel so dark, why can't I really talk to anyone about it?” he thought to himself as he sat outside the counselor’s office. It had been a couple of days since they sat on the bench and talked. After their talk, he'd felt better about himself. It had been a long time since he’d felt that good. But, he had so many questions in his mind and Ms. Smith was the only person he thought he could trust.

His anxiety mounted. “She probably can't help me either,” he said to himself as he stood to leave. “It's not worth it.”

The door opened and Ms.
