We are the Haverford branch of Black Students Refusing Further Inaction (BSRFI), a group of Black students at Haverford and Bryn Mawr colleges that formed to demand action toward dismantling anti-Black practices and culture within the Bi-Co.

“It cannot be denied that the university is a place of refuge, and it cannot be accepted that the university is a place of enlightenment.” (The Undercommons 26)

As we strike to demand livable conditions for our BIPOC and FGLI peers we want to establish spaces where we, together, can continue to think with the strike, its goals, its values, and its future. Why and how did we get here? Where are we going? How do we continue the work of undoing the racist, anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, classist university begun by the strike and Black student organizers past actions?

The critiques posed by the demands are not confined to the administrative but seep into the hierarchical format of classes themselves. Wendy Raymond and the Board of Directors aren’t the only ones who have to answer to the strike, so must our peers, our teachers, and ourselves. These oppositional learning spaces will interrogate all the ways we have been taught to teach and learn, holding space “in but not of” Haverford College. We hope that these workshops, freedom dreams, and conversations will provide both the contextual and the specific knowledge necessary for organizers and supporters to further the demands of the strike and of the ongoing global movements against Anti-Black and anti-indigenous regulatory institutions. Student facilitators will be paired with each other and with faculty members to develop spaces that are geared towards imagining anew, and imagining otherwise.
