Next time you’re opening a container, starting a favorite song, or handing out snack, pause right before the key word. Wait 5 seconds. Give their brains time to process and output.

A little paint, a few choices, and A LOT of creativity!

Mrs. Haynie’s class at Dewberry Daycare got creative with a fun floral painting activity — and we love how much choice was built into this small-group experience!

Instead of every child making the exact same bouquet, students got to:
🌸 Choose their own sponges
🎨 Pick their paint colors
💐 Decide where each flower would go
✨ Create a bouquet that was completely their own!

That’s the magic of open-ended activities! When teachers provide the materials and the invitation to create, children get to take the lead, make decisions, experiment, and express their own ideas.

When children get to make the choices, their creativity gets to shine. ✨

There is something so special about seeing little ones take charge of their daily routines. Whether it is hanging up their own backpack at school or helping out around the house, encouraging independence in early childhood builds incredible confidence, responsibility, and a "I can do it!" mindset.
