Tonight I had the opportunity to speak at the School Board meeting. I originally came prepared to discuss communication concerns, but I felt compelled to also speak on concerns surrounding band enrollment and student opportunities.
This is not about pointing fingers or criticizing any one person. My concern is for our students and making sure they continue to have access to opportunities that help them grow.
Not every child connects through traditional academics alone. For some students, music, art, and extracurricular programs are where they find confidence, belonging, creativity, and passion. These programs matter. These programs also inherently enhance test scores and promotes self discipline.
The board clarified that they do not directly control class scheduling decisions, and I appreciate that clarification.
Even with that distinction, I believe conversations about student opportunities are still important.
Boards can indirectly influence what becomes possible through:
Budget decisions
Staffing approvals
District priorities
Program support
Questions and oversight
I also believe communication matters. Teachers, families, and students should feel informed and included when changes affect programs and opportunities available to our kids.
I support our teachers. I support our students. I support asking questions and having open conversations before opportunities disappear.
Strong public schools are not built only through test scores. They are built through trust, communication, and making sure every child has a place to thrive.

Many parents feel unsupported while trying to help thier child. I was that parent with two autistic children, so I understand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re trying to advocate for support and resources.

I think many parents want to see more communication, earlier intervention, and clearer pathways for getting help when children are struggling — especially with behavioral or special learning needs.

Some solutions I would personally like to explore and support include:

• stronger parent-school communication and follow-up,

• earlier behavioral intervention before situations escalate,

• additional staff training for de-escalation and disability awareness,

• increased access to behavioral and special education resources,

• clearer support plans and accountability for implementation,

• and stronger partnerships between schools, families, and outside support services when needed.

I believe teachers and staff are often doing the best they can with limited resources, but families should not feel like they are facing these challenges alone. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a setting where they feel understood, supported, and safe while also maintaining productive classroom environments for all students.

I will tell you something amazing I started this in 2023 with 21 amazing kindergarteners. Every year this has gotten bigger and better. I love it and I support it. A lot of people say no graduation is only for Highschoolers. Highschoolers are really important because thats the transition from a kid to an adult, but this right here celebrates the struggle of being away from home and having to do things independently from mom, dad, or guardian. Many kids going into kindergarten never have been in a class room setting and have to work thier way through structured learning and that is hard and should be awarded.

I can't express enough how much amazement this has grown and has been supported by the community.

Honestly, one of the biggest concerns I keep hearing about is the breakdown of trust and communication between the three groups that support a school system most — the board, parents, and teachers.
When communication weakens, frustration grows on every side. Teachers can feel unsupported, parents can feel unheard, and boards can become disconnected from the day-to-day concerns happening inside classrooms and homes. The only people who suffer from this disconnect is the children.
I think rebuilding that trust starts with consistency, transparency, listening without becoming defensive, and creating clearer communication expectations so people know where information is coming from and how concerns can be addressed.
Strong public schools work best when the board, teachers, and parents operate as partners instead of feeling like opposing sides.
