Yesterday, 90 minutes before graduation, our world was turned upside down. The time and location of our graduation ceremony changed while students and families were already making their way to the original venue. Tornado Watch! In an instant, the focus shifted from celebrating our graduates to answering one overwhelming question: Where do we begin?

Who do we call first? Students? Families? Staff? How do we get the word out quickly and accurately while phones are ringing nonstop and new information keeps coming in? The stress was real. The emotions were overwhelming.

But what happened next is something I will never forget. Before I could even ask, people stepped up. There was no hesitation. No waiting for directions. No questions about whose responsibility it was. Everywhere I turned, I heard the same words: “I got you.”, “Tell me what you need.”, “It will be great.”
“We’re here.”

In the middle of uncertainty and chaos, our team did what they always do; they showed up for our students and for one another.

I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the countless staff members, district colleagues, security and facilities teams who worked together to make the impossible possible. There are too many people to name, but please know that your support meant more than words can express.

And then, somehow, despite every obstacle, we had one of the most beautiful graduation ceremonies I have ever experienced. Our students were celebrated. Their accomplishments were honored. Their moment was preserved.

When it was all over, I sat alone in my car in the parking lot. Tears rolled down my face as I watched from a distance. Families were taking pictures. Graduates were hugging their friends and teachers. Parents were beaming with pride. Smiles were everywhere. In that quiet moment, after the stress, uncertainty, and countless challenges of the day, I was reminded why we do this work. Not for the recognition. Not for the title. But for moments like these.

I often say that I am blessed and lucky to work alongside extraordinary people. Yesterday was another powerful reminder of just how true that is.

To everyone who stepped up without being asked, who solved problems without seeking credit, and who made sure our students had the graduation they deserved: thank you.

I am grateful beyond words.

A special thank you and congratulations to Ms. Mitchell, whose unwavering commitment, expertise, and high expectations continue to prepare students for success in both college and careers. She holds students to rigorous standards while providing the support and guidance they need to excel.
