Meet one our instructors, Kristi!
My name is Kristi Smith.
I was short 1/2 credit to graduate from high school way back in 1992. Had anyone noticed sooner I could have switched my study hall for an elective but, no one noticed until a few weeks before graduation. For some reason, the school district policy was that I would have to attend a full year to get my half credit to graduate. I wasn't about to go to high school for an entire year for a measly half credit. I waited about a year, then decided to get my GED.. Thankfully SIC offered testing and I was able to take it close to home (back then it was a pen and paper test!). I worked for the family business for about 10 years then got married and moved to Germany (military wife) While there I started working as a pre-school teachers aid at the on-post child development center. Fast forward a couple years, a divorce, and a move back to Southern Illinois with no real idea what I was going to do with the rest of my I decided to go back to school in my 30's. I now have my Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Equine Science from SIUC, work full time for IDOT and have the pleasure in helping others achieve their goal in getting their GED also. I think I'm proof that it's never too late to start making goals and working toward achieving them.
We will miss you Adrianna! We can't wait to see what the future holds for you! -Your SIC Family 💙💛
Experiencing the GED classes at SIC is amazing. I started this year at Carrier Mills Elementary and had the best teacher ever, Mrs. McGuire. Unfortunately for everyone, Mrs. McGuire had to step down. However, Audrey Talbott did not skip a beat and stepped up immediately to help us in any way she could. She is the most attentive, helpful, kind hearted person I've ever encountered. She truly has made me enjoy school again. My tutor, Scott was also more helpful than he will ever give himself credit for. He was not just patient, but taught me in a way that I was actually learning. I have been trying to get my GED since I was 24 and I am now 33 and closer than I have ever been to finally obtaining it. Because of Audrey and the SIC GED program, I will finally be able to take the next step in achieving my goals. This has been a great ride and an even better experience and I am forever grateful for every person involved. -Adrianna H.
