Dr. Tony Zavaleta delivered a compelling talk on Hispanic curanderismo, drawing on 50 years of research into healing traditions across the Borderlands. As a medical anthropologist, he described conversations with Hispanic healers and examined the practices they used to care for underserved rural communities. From Don Pedro Jaramillo to El Niño Fidencio, Dr. Zavaleta spent decades researching and writing about curanderos whose work was often misunderstood. Rather than treating curanderismo as myth or superstition, he set out to explain its deeper purpose: helping the sick when few other resources were available. Many healers called on spiritual figures such as saints or a religious deity, blending faith, tradition, and community care. In the 1950s and 1960s, nearly every neighborhood had a curandero, making these healers an important presence in everyday life.
