Behind every successful DNP student is a faculty member who believed in them every step of the way.

This spring, we proudly spotlighted our DNP students who crossed the finish line and earned their degrees. Now, it's time to recognize the incredible faculty behind those accomplished DNP graduates- our DNP chairs.
These faculty mentors walk beside the students through every stage of the doctoral journey. From the earliest project ideas to the final defense, they guide, encourage, challenge, support, and celebrate each milestone. They are more than academic advisors. They are mentors, cheerleaders, problem solvers, and a support system during some of the most demanding moments of a student's journey.
To our DNP chairs: Dr. Coletta Barrett, Dr. Luanne Billingsley and Dr. Danielle Charrier, thank you for shaping future nurse leaders and making such a lasting impact. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’› Danielle Charrier, Coletta Barrett

Meet Monica R. Young, RN, FNP, a passionate nurse leader from Baton Rouge who is dedicated to improving patient outcomes through innovation, compassion, and perseverance.

Inspired by witnessing her fatherโ€™s healthcare journey at a young age, Monica pursued nursing with one goal in mind, making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. That passion ultimately led her to pursue a DNP and advance her impact in healthcare leadership and quality improvement.

Monicaโ€™s DNP project focuses on reinforcing inpatient mobility in adult patients requiring advanced oxygen support. Using the Johns Hopkins AMP Toolkit, her 12-week quality improvement initiative aims to enhance patient outcomes by promoting safe mobility practices in the acute care setting.

Her work has already sparked continued collaboration with the Performance Improvement Department, which will launch the Awake & Walking Initiative in Intermediate and Intensive Care Units in June 2026, helping transform mobility practices and improve quality outcomes for hospitalized patients.

One of Monicaโ€™s proudest accomplishments during her DNP journey was simply reaching the finish line, a testament to her resilience, determination, and commitment to excellence.

After graduation, Monica plans to continue serving in the acute care hospital setting while also exploring opportunities in primary care and teaching future nurses on a part time basis.

Fun fact, Monica looks forward to reenrolling in violin classes and singing with the symphony choir, blending creativity and compassion both inside and outside of healthcare.

Join us in celebrating Monica Youngโ€™s hard work, passion, and commitment to advancing nursing practice! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

What does it look like to turn personal inspiration into meaningful change in patient care?

Meet Ann Marie Onstad, a Family Nurse Practitioner whose journey through oncology, pediatrics, and nursing education has shaped her passion for both patient care and teaching future nurses.

Ann Marie pursued her DNP to achieve a lifelong goal of earning a terminal degree and expanding her impact as both a clinician and educator. With a strong passion for teaching, she is driven to help train the next generation of nurse practitioners while continuing to provide high quality care.

Her DNP project addresses a deeply personal and increasingly important issue, improving care for elderly patients with dementia. Inspired by her grandmotherโ€™s experience with Alzheimerโ€™s disease, Ann Marie developed a dementia toolkit designed to help hospital teams deliver more consistent, compassionate, and effective care for this vulnerable population.

Her work aims to improve the hospital experience for patients with dementia while supporting healthcare providers with practical, evidence-based strategies that can be adopted across healthcare systems.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares, โ€œIf you have the calling, there is a way, even when it seems impossible.โ€

Earning her DNP while raising six children, including welcoming twins during one of her most challenging semesters, is a testament to her resilience, determination, and commitment to her family and her future.

After graduation, Ann Marie plans to continue practicing while also pursuing opportunities to teach future nurse practitioners and expand her impact in nursing education.

Fun fact, she is a proud mom of six and spends her weekends cheering on her kids at soccer games and swim meets, often with her computer in hand continuing her DNP work.

Join us in celebrating Ann Marie Onstadโ€™s incredible journey and dedication to advancing nursing practice, and imagine where your DNP journey could take you. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›
