Women in Science and Engineering at UBuffalo Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) at the University at Buffalo organizes opportunities geared

Women in Science and Engineering, WiSE, is a collaborative effort between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at UB. Officially starting with the class of 2018, WiSE aims to increase the interest, recruitment and retention of women in the STEM fields through a committed support system of peers as well as diverse and inclusive extracurricular opportun

ities. According to IPEDS data, women outpace men in obtaining degrees in the social sciences, psychology, biology and the agricultural sciences; while they lag behind in engineering, math and computer science, and the physical sciences. The University at Buffalo student body shows healthy numbers in the STEM fields overall but WiSE is dedicated to promoting awareness and resources for all students. We invite all students, first year through graduate, to participate in WiSE! We will exchange new ideas, gain confidence, expand knowledge, and provide and receive support to maintain our ever increasing success in the STEM world.

Join WiSE as we visit the Coalesce BioArt lab and do a hands on activity with camera lucida drawing. Sign up at the link in out bio.

A camera lucida is a 19th-century drawing aid. When you look into the eyepiece, you see a ghost image of your subject overlaid onto your paper. Since you can see your hand holding your pencil with your subject superimposed, you can trace directly from real life. Invented in 1807, before photographic processes were invented, the camera lucida was used by artists, scientists, architects, and engineers to produce accurate stills from life.

Coalesce: Center for Biological Arts, a hybrid studio laboratory facility on campus, dedicated to enabling hands-on creative engagement with the tools and technologies of the life sciences. It is an interdisciplinary place where artists, designers and architects actively learn, use and create, using life sciences technologies as their medium and scientists explore new forms or broader cultural meanings of their work.

WiSE will be visiting one of National Fuel’s offices for a site visit. This is a great chance to network with their staff and see what their workplace is like in person. WiSE will be providing transportation for this trip.

National Fuel Site Visit Tour
Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2026
Time: 8:30-11:30 AM, (including travel time). We’ll be visiting from 9:00-11:00 AM, so planning to leave Lee Loop on North Campus by the Commons at 8:30 AM and be back on campus by 11:30 AM.
Location: 6363 Main St (6363 Main St, Williamsville, New York 14221)

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student involved in technical research or hands-on projects? Would you like to share your work with a broad audience and sharpen your communication skills?
Submit your proposal to participate in STEM for Everyone on April 16, 2026 - https://ub-gradeng.formstack.com/forms/stem_for_everyone_proposal_submission_form_2026

- Proposals are due by March 18, 2026
- Students will receive notification of acceptance by March 20, 2026
- Presentation slides must be submitted by April 12, 2026

This event provides a platform for students to communicate the significance of their work in non-technical language, an important skill for any STEM professional. Creativity is encouraged!
Participants will benefit from mentorship and constructive feedback as they are preparing their presentation, and will be eligible to win prizes for strong submissions.

WiSE students will get to use the equipment and create something it the machine shop. The workshop will walk participants through the various machine processes involved. ⁣
⁣
IMPORTANT: Each participant completes the online Machine Shop Safety Certification Course (https://engineering.buffalo.edu/home/school/explore/facilities/machine-shop/safety-procedures.html) prior to attending the workshop.⁣
⁣
Participants will have to use their UB ID Card in the swipe card reader to enter the shop, and will swipe again once inside, to verify their completion of the training.⁣

Join us for lightning presentations from alumnae in STEM fields who are at various stages in their career as they discuss the opportunities and possibilities as females in their industries as well as overcoming challenges they have faced throughout their careers. We hope to provide a platform and space to engage, empower, and support one another by sharing diverse information, perspectives and experiences.

Following the panel we will have alumni to student small group speed mentoring with various table topics then open networking with food and drinks. This is a great opportunity for both alumni and students that you won't want to miss!

Join WiSE as we visit the Coalesce: Center for Biological Arts, a hybrid studio laboratory facility on campus, dedicated to enabling hands-on creative engagement with the tools and technologies of the life sciences. It is an interdisciplinary place where artists, designers and architects actively learn, use and create, using life sciences technologies as their medium and scientists explore new forms or broader cultural meanings of their work.

We will meet with their resident, Azza El Siddique (b. Khartoum, Sudan), who creates immersive, room-sized sculptural environments from welded steel that explore themes of entropy, impermanence, and mortality.
