Halifax County High School Honored for Outstanding Teen Traffic Safety Initiatives

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Halifax County High School was among 23 standout recipients recognized at the annual Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) Awards Banquet, held Saturday, July 19 at James Madison University. Lt. Colonel Todd Taylor, Director of the Bureau of Field Operations for the Virginia State Police, delivered the keynote address.

The banquet, themed “Showcasing YOVASO's Top Performers in Teen Traffic Safety,” celebrated students, schools, youth groups, teachers, community partners, and law enforcement agencies from across Virginia who demonstrated exemplary efforts during the 2025–2026 school year to promote
safe driving and passenger safety among teens.

Halifax Award Highlights:
• Impaired Driving Prevention: Halifax County High School Awarded in recognition of a member club’s outstanding programs and activities to encourage safety belt use among youth and teens. Award may recognize one exceptional program or a body of work.
• Outstanding Club Recognition: Halifax County High School (4th Year Recipient) This distinction celebrates former Club of the Year recipients who continue to achieve excellence and uphold best practices in peer-to-peer traffic safety education. Clubs are awarded an original plaque and receive ribbons for each additional year they achieve this recognition.

YOVASO is Virginia’s peer‑to‑peer education and prevention program for teen driver safety. The program is part of the Virginia State Police and is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Since 2001, YOVASO has worked with schools and youth groups statewide to improve young driver and passenger safety
