We gave up a day of summer break because this issue can't wait.
Oregon requires schools to provide Special Education services, but doesn't fully fund them.
When districts have to make up the difference, every student feels the impact.
Special Education isn't optional.
Funding it shouldn't be either.

The Centennial Education Association stood alongside unions and education advocates from across Oregon today to demand action.

We called on lawmakers to hold a special session to access emergency education funding and to end Oregon's Special Education funding cap once and for all.

The SPED cap forces districts to absorb costs for students after a certain threshold, creating impossible budget choices and limiting support for students who need it most.

And honestly, you know things are getting serious when teachers are willing to give up one of the first days of their summer break to spend it at a budget hearing. We'd all rather be enjoying the sunshine, but our students are worth showing up for.

Oregon's students cannot wait. Public education needs investment now, and Special Education is not optional.

Proud to represent CEA at the IHEAR Equity Summit alongside our Treasurer, Alicia Brown. This incredible event is organized by OEA Equity Director and fellow CEA member Monica Weathersby, bringing educators together to learn, listen, and lead with equity at the center of our work. We spent the day connecting with educators from across Oregon, sharing ideas, building relationships, and strengthening our commitment to creating schools where every student and educator feels seen, valued, and supported. Grateful for the opportunity to learn from such passionate advocates including our own Amanda Kassab Johnson and to bring those lessons back to Centennial. ❤️✊📚

Tonight, Centennial Education Association was honored with a Presidential Citation at the Oregon Education Association Representative Assembly Awards Ceremony for our work in bargaining, organizing, and standing strong for our members.

This recognition belongs to every educator who showed up, spoke out, wore red, attended actions, voted, organized their buildings, and refused to settle for less than our students and staff deserve.

We’re also incredibly proud that our own Clarissa Buchholz received the Members’ Rights Award for her tireless work helping wake the sleeping giant within our membership and building the power it takes to create change.

These awards are an honor—but the real victory is what happens when educators come together in solidarity.

This is what union power looks like.
This is what member-driven change looks like.
And we’re just getting started.

📊 New Study Highlights Funding Inequities in Oregon Schools

A new report highlighted by Willamette Week confirms what many of us in East County already experience every day: Oregon’s school funding system disadvantages high-poverty districts.
Communities like Centennial, Parkrose, David Douglas, and Reynolds serve large numbers of students with significant needs, yet the current funding model often leaves districts like ours with fewer resources where the need is greatest.

In Centennial, the challenge is even greater because we have very few businesses within district boundaries contributing to the local tax base.

Our students deserve the same opportunities as students anywhere in Oregon. That means we must:

• Fully fund the Quality Education Model
• End the SPED funding cap
• Reform the state’s education funding system so it reflects the needs of our communities

It’s time Oregon invests in every student, in every zip code.
