After 1066, England was split into two. By 1100, the country spoke two languages:
The nobles ran things in Norman French
The commoners kept speaking Old English
One was the language of courts, castles, and power.
The other? Fields, hearths, and hard work.
Language Revealed Your Status
French gave us justice, royal, parliament
English gave us bread, house, plough
Even dinner exposed the divide:
You raised a cow (English)
They feasted on beef (French)
Then Came the Blend
By the 1300s, English made a comeback, with a twist:
Over 10,000 French words flooded in
Grammar got simpler
That fusion? We call it Middle English.
Why It Matters
Modern English still wears the scars and sparkle of 1066:
Its structure is Germanic
Its vocabulary is half French
It can be plain or poetic, formal or folksy, all thanks to a war and a wedding in 1066.

Color of 2025
Pantone Color of the Year 2025
For 2025, the Pantone Color Institute selects PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, a warming, brown hue imbued with richness. It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort.

I love collaborating with my grandsons. This work was done with Kieran as the photographer and both he and his bro Rowan as poets.
The paper is made from old Tshirts. Pearlescent inks and my own script.

Since I determined today to be a "share" day, this piece was just uploaded to an international calligraphy group that I am in. The assignment was flowers. I wanted to see what the future of stencils within my work is... verdict, ehh. They got painted over. I also wanted to use a brush to build up a script with multiple strokes.

This piece is in the Member Show at the Center for Creative Arts. Original is ink and gouache. This is #5 in a limited edition print series from that graphic.

Submitted this new painting, inspired by Jacqueline Sullivan 's Asheville workshop on gelprints and bookmaking, to a Greenville art show, entitled Embodied Wisdom. Thoughts?

I am not doing anything with gift cards. If you get anything involving gift cards from my email account, it is a scam.
